Walker's Career Day Pushes Volleyball Past Jackson State in Five

FLORENCE, Ala. - The Mocs wrapped up the Noona Kennard Invitational with their first five-set match of the year, defeating Jackson State 3-2. In a closely contested match with three sets decided by two points, UTC took the fifth and final set, 15-11 to earn the win.

Series Notes
Chattanooga moves to 7-1 all-time against Jackson State and have won two in a row in the series… Today's meeting was the first since 2017… The Mocs are now 4-1 versus the Tigers on a neutral court.
How it Happened
After JSU scored the first three points, Chattanooga found itself down early in set one and trailed by as many as five points throughout the set. The key moment was a 5-0 run to tie the set at 21, spurred on by kills from Jordin Glass, Addison Walker, and Delaney Wingenbach. Later on with the score knotted up at 24, a service error for the Tigers followed by a Kill from Gracie Rose clinched the set for the Mocs.
In set two, JSU and UTC went back-and-forth for the first part of the set, as the score read 9-9 after a kill by Glass. The Tigers then scored seven of the next nine points to take a 16-11 lead. Immediately afterwards, a 6-0 Chattanooga run capped off by a kill from Ashley Reynolds put her team back up 17-16. JSU gained back control, eventually leading 24-23. However, three consecutive points for the Mocs, two of which were kills from Glass won them the set 26-24 once again.
The third set proved to be the most tightly contested of the bunch as neither side led by more than three points with UTC up 9-6 before JSU held a 23-20 lead. Chattanooga held off two set points at 24-22 and 25-24 to stay alive in its pursuit of a sweep. That being said, back-to-back kills from the Tigers' Ryleigh Davis gave them a 27-25 set win to put a point on the board.
In set four, JSU ran out to a 10-6 lead before a 3-0 Mocs run capped off by a service ace from Glass made it a one-point set. The two sides continued to play each other tough as a kill by Walker followed by an attack error from the Tigers tied the set at 18. JSU then turned it up a notch, scoring six straight points on its way to a 25-20 win to force a deciding fifth set.
With the score tied at six in the fifth set, a 6-0 run by Chattanooga was the pivotal point of the match. Two kills from Rose, and kills by Glass and Walker anchored the run for the Mocs. More kills from Walker and Glass put Chattanooga on match point at 14-10. JSU survived one point, but an attack error ended the set at 15-11, giving the Mocs a 3-2 win.
Individual and Team Stats

Walker had a career day, totaling a career-high 21 kills with a .421 hitting percentage. She is the first Moc since Sydney Jackwin on Oct. 9 of last season at Western Carolina to have 20 or more kills.

Glass was one off her career high in attack as well, tallying 15 kills to go along with four total blocks.

Rose was also in double figures in kills for Chattanooga with 10 kills.

Ashley Reynolds had her best assist total of the year with 37 to her name. She also contributed seven digs and three service aces.

Caiti Barthel flirted with a double-double with 18 digs and seven assists as did Kirkendoll with a season-high seven total blocks and a season-high eight digs.

Chattanooga had 68 kills in the match, which was its first match with 60 or more kills this season.

The Mocs had 11 total blocks while the Tigers had seven.

Jackson State had a +10 (65-55) advantage in assists and a +8 advantage in digs (65-57) in the final box score despite the loss.

JSU was led by Hope Briggs who also had 21 kills.

Up Next: Chattanooga travels to Charlotte to play in the Queen City Classic Sept. 11-12. The Mocs are scheduled to take on Queens (N.C.), Presbyterian, and Buffalo throughout the weekend.
