Women's Basketball Rutgers Postgame

2003-04 Athletic Highlights

The women's basketball team posted the first-ever NCAA Tournament victory in school and Southern Conference history with a win over Rutgers in March.  UTC hosted the NCAA Women's Basketball Midwest Regional First and Second Round games at The McKenzie Arena.
 
The women's basketball team, which recorded a 29-3 overall record, owned the nation's best winning percentage and produced the country's longest winning streak of 27 consecutive victories.
 
The wrestling team sent five individuals to the NCAA Championships.  Matt Pitts advanced to the quarterfinal round, and the team's 29th-place finish is the best since 1992.
 
The Mocs earned three Southern Conference individual wrestling titles, Josh Keefe at 133 pounds, Jon Sioredas at 165 and John Davis at 184.
 
The men's basketball team advanced to the SoCon Tournament Championship Game for the second consecutive year before falling to rival East Tennessee State.
 
Senior forward Ashley Champion was selected to both the Coaches and Media All-Southern Conference Teams after averaging 18.1 points per game.
 
John Shulman replaced Jeff Lebo as head coach of the Mocs.  He was named head coach on April 16, 2004.
 
Head soccer coach J.D. Kyzer was voted the 2003 SoCon Coach of the Year after guiding the team to a program-best 10-6-3 record and its first-ever trip to the SoCon Tournament.
 
Diana Jallo and Elfa Erlingsdottir were First-Team All-SoCon selections, while Brooke Crandall made the Second Team.
 
The men's cross country team placed four runners in the top 10 and claimed the 2003 Southern Conference Championship.
 
Steven Kocsis won the men's race and was named the SoCon Runner of the Year.  Head Coach Bill Gautier earned SoCon Coach of the Year honors, and Kathleen Turchin was voted the league's Freshman of the Year.
 
Senior volleyball player Kari Krouse became the first player in school history to be named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-South Region Team.  In 2003, she set a SoCon record for career aces with 290.  Krouse was also the first Lady Moc to earn All-SoCon honors for four consecutive years.
 
Football receiver Alonzo Nix set a school and SoCon single-game record with 18 catches against Wofford.  He also set a UTC and conference single-season record with 90 receptions.  He was an All-SoCon performer and was listed as a Second-Team All-America.
 
Golfer Matt Brock placed third at the 2004 SoCon Championships.  It was his fifth top-five finish of the season and was the highest individual finish for a UTC golfer at the SoCon Tournament since 1997.
 
Runner Shannon Wommack earned All-America status at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships by finishing 11th in the 5,000-meter run.  She becomes just the third-ever UTC student-athlete to be named All-America in track.
 
Steven Kocsis completed a SoCon sweep, earning Runner of the Year honors for both Indoor and Outdoor seasons.  He captured Cross Country Runner of the Year accolades in the fall.  Kathleen Turchin also completed a SoCon sweep, winning SoCon Freshman of the Year honors in cross country, indoor and outdoor track.
 
The women's team claimed SoCon Outdoor Track titles in the 1,500 (Wommack), the 3,000 steeplechase (Wommack), the 5,000 (Lanni Marchant) and the 10,000 (Kathleen Turchin) while the men garnered titles in the 400 hurdles (Chris Harrington), 5,000 (Kocsis), the 10,000 (Kocsis) and the 3,000 steeplechase (Linas Salkauskas).
 
Shannon Wommack was named SoCon Indoor Performer of the Year and Kathleen Turchin was the SoCon Freshman of the Year at the Indoor Championships.
 
The softball team won its eighth Southern Conference Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive season.
 
The Lady Mocs swept the conference awards as Frank Reed was named SoCon Coach of the Year, Melissa Ramirez received Player of the Year honors and Lacey Swarthout was the SoCon Pitcher of the Year.
 
Swarthout became the first pitcher in SoCon history to eclipse the 300 strikeout plateau in a single season.
