CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs led the Southern Conference in the final Learfield Directors' Cup standings. The index was released by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) this week.
It's the second-highest finish ever for the Mocs placing 110th among all NCAA Division I schools.
"Our strong showing in the Learfield Cup standings is just another example of how great our student-athletes are," stated Vice Chancellor for Athletics Mark Wharton. "We have great coaches leading our programs, an outstanding support staff and complete support from our campus community. Tie that into the amazing fan and donor backing that we have cultivated, and it is easy to see why we prove to be one of the best programs at our level."
Chattanooga scored a total of 164 points thanks to NCAA postseason appearances in football (53), women's basketball (25), wrestling (20), men's golf (16), beach volleyball (25) and softball (25). It's the most total points scored by the department in the annual competition since 180.5 in 2009.
That season was the high-water mark placing 99th overall. This is the sixth time leading the SoCon in the standings and first since 2015. Other SoCon finishers include ETSU (133), Furman (139), Mercer (154), Wofford (202), UNCG (247), Samford (262), Western Carolina (262) and VMI (302).
On the FCS level, the Mocs ranked 11th in the nation. The 164-point total also exceeded schools like Cincinnati (Big 12), UAB (American), St. John's and Seton Hall (Big East) as well as the entirety of regional rivals from the ASUN, Big South and Ohio Valley Conferences.
The scoring is based on a maximum of 19 sports. Two women's – volleyball & basketball – and two men's programs – basketball & baseball – are required followed by the highest sports scores across the board not to exceed 15 more tallies. Those are regardless of gender.
The Learfield Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships.
