Anderson Leads Lady Mocs to Tenth SoCon Win

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Chattanooga junior Alex Anderson tallied her 13th double-double this season to lead the Lady Mocs past Appalachian State 76-58 at the McKenzie Arena in Southern Conference action Thursday night.

The Mountaineers fall below .500 at 11-12 overall and are 5-7 in league action. The win gives the Lady Mocs a half-game lead in conference play with Davidson and Western Carolina facing off Saturday at Davidson. Chattanooga improves to 17-6 overall and becomes the first team in the league to hit 10 wins at 10-2 in SoCon play.

Anderson had 16 points and eight boards in the first half alone, including a 3-pointer and closed out the game with 24 points and 11 rebounds. She had three assists, one steal and four blocked shots on the night. Freshman Jenaya Wade-Fray was hot from beyond the arc again tonight with a 4-for-7 performance. She was a perfect 3-for-3 in the second half and had 13 points and tied her career-high with seven rebounds.

The Mountaineers went 0-for-4 to start the game with one turnover while the Lady Mocs knocked down its first three shots to take a 6-0 lead. Appalachian State tied it up twice before taking an 18-16 lead at the 10:21 mark and then stretched its lead to five nearly four minutes later on a 3-pointer from Whitney Tossie.

Wade-Fray's first trey of the game cut the lead to two and a pair of free throws from Laura Hall tied the game 21-21 at the 5:24 mark. The Lady Mocs would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game and were ahead 35-27 at the break.

In the second half, the Mountaineers cut the lead to four with a 3-pointer from Carleena Costner just 53 seconds into the period. That was as close as it would get, however, as the Lady Mocs wouldn't let Appalachian State any closer than nine points the remainder of the game.

Brooke Hand went 3-for-9 from the 3-point line on the night just missing double-digits with nine points and three rebounds. Freshman forward Shanara Hollinquest, playing in her third game since returning to the floor, went 3-for-3 from the field and 3-for-3 from the free throw line for a nine-point performance. She grabbed three rebounds and had one assist and one steal in 11 minutes.

Appalachian State had four players in double digits on the night led by Whitney Tossie's 13 points. She had four rebounds, two assists, three steals and two blocked shots in the game. Whitney Ketner tossed in 12 points off the bench making 6-of-6 free throws and had four rebounds.

Jaime Bennett just missed a double-double with 11 points and a team-leading nine rebounds while Costner had 10 points. Maria Grimes, going 0-for-12 from the field, grabbed eight off the glass and dished out five assists.

The Mountaineers outrebounded UTC 41-40 and had 14 second chance points off 13 offensive rebounds. The Lady Mocs committed a season-low nine turnovers and scored 18 points off 19 ASU turns.

The Lady Mocs will host Davidson Monday night at the McKenzie Arena. The game will tip off at 7 p.m. as UTC looks to stay on top of the conference standings. Appalachian State will host Western Carolina Monday night in Boone, N.C., at 7 p.m.
