Lady Mocs ReClaim Share of SoCon Lead with Win Over Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Chattanooga women's basketball team downed Furman 64-48 Monday evening at Timmons Arena and moved back into a share of first place in the Southern Conference standings.

The Lady Mocs improved to 19-7 overall and 12-3 in league play and climbed back into a tie for first with Western Carolina after the Catamounts fell 83-81 to Georgia Southern in Cullowhee, N.C. in overtime. Furman falls to 9-17 overall and 4-11 in the SoCon.

Alex Anderson led all scorers with 21 points, grabbed eight boards and was the only UTC player in double figures. Brooke Hand went 3-for-5 from the 3-point line with nine points in the game. Erin Ogan scored eight points and Shanara Hollingquest had seven points and four rebounds.

With a pair of 3-pointers from Sarah Baker in the first three minutes of the contest, Furman jumped out to its largest lead of the game at 10-4. Brooke Hand drained a 3-pointer cutting the lead in half. Anderson hit a layup and converted on the free throw to tie the game at 10-10 and the Lady Mocs never trailed again. Chattanooga went up by as much as six points in the first half and led by five at halftime shooting 10-for-23 in the period.

In the second half, Anderson scored 16 of UTC's 21 points to start the second half including an eight minute stretch where she outscored Furman 14-8 to put UTC up 49-33 with 8:51 to play. The Lady Mocs led by as much as 20 points twice in the second half and held off the Paladins for the win.

Chattanooga's 3-point game resurfaced Monday night with Tagan Hatchett adding two to Hand's three while Ogan and Amy Mohr each went 1-for-1 from beyond the arc. UTC was 7-for-12 on the night for a 58.3 percent performance. The Lady Mocs out rebounded the Paladins 32-25 and outscored Furman 30-16 in the paint. Kristen Spann and Tagan Hatchett each tossed in six points for Chattanooga.

The Lady Mocs will return home to host the College of Charleston Saturday at 5 p.m. on Trading Card Night. The game will be the first of a Mocs Double-Header as the men will host Jacksonville State in an ESPN BracketBuster game immediately following the women's game.

Alex Anderson has 1,035 points and is in sole possession of 17th place on the Lady Mocs' all-time scoring list. She is 43 points away from 16th.

Alex Anderson needs just 12 rebounds to enter the top 10 all-time charts at UTC.

Alex Anderson is ninth on the Lady Mocs single-season charts for points scored at 550 and 10th for rebounds with 267.

Laura Hall moved into sole possession of 10th place on the Lady Mocs' all-time list for assists with 276. She passed Kim Weems' career total of 274.

Brooke Hand has 211 career 3-pointers. She needs five to reach Katasha Brown's Southern Conference and Chattanooga career record of 216.

Brooke Hand's 69 three-pointers this season are the fourth most ever made in a single season at UTC.
