Hall Leads Lady Mocs Past Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. -- Chattanooga junior Laura Hall hit three crucial shots, including a 3-pointer late in the second half to push the Lady Mocs past Georgia Southern 65-52 in Southern Conference action Monday at Hanner Fieldhouse.

Georgia Southern's Tiffany Brown hit a pair of free throws then made a fast break layup to cut Chattanooga's lead to 50-47 with 7:40 to play. Hall responded with a jumper, sparking a 10-0 run to give the Lady Mocs a 13-point lead at 60-47 with 1:38 to play. UTC held the Eagles to a 2-for-14 performance over the final seven minutes of the game.

Hall led the Lady Mocs with 17 points, making 6-of-11, including two 3-pointers. She dished out two assists and grabbed four steals. Brooke Hand went 3-for-8 from 3-point range for 13 points on the night, pulling down four rebounds and nabbing two steals. Alex Anderson reached double figures in rebounding in the first half with 11 and notched her 15th double-double of the year with 10 points and 15 boards.

Georgia Southern's only lead in the game came early. Anderson went 1-for-2 from the free throw line after drawing a foul in the first minute of play. GSU's Jessie Chequilla made a layup to put the Eagles up 2-1. Anderson hit a layup on the ensuing possession and the Lady Mocs never relinquished the lead going up by as much as 11 in the first. The Eagles got as close as 24-21 with 4:47 to play in the first half, but Hand drained a pair of 3-pointers push the lead to nine at 30-21. The Lady Mocs led 33-26 at the half.

Brown led all scorers with 18 points, including four 3-pointers. She pulled down seven rebounds and had three assists before fouling out late in the game. Shawnda Atwood tossed in 15 points for the Eagles and had a team-high 13 rebounds. Carolyn Whitney dished out five assists and Ashley Rivens had five steals.

Chattanooga scored 23 points on 18 Georgia Southern turnovers and generated 19 points from its bench. The Eagles outrebounded the Lady Mocs 45-43 and scored 14 second chance points on 18 offensive rebounds compared to Chattanooga's 11 points on 13 offensive boards.

Chattanooga improves to 21-7 overall and 14-3 in league play with its third straight win. The Eagles fall to 11-17 overall and 6-11 in the SoCon.

The Lady Mocs will close out the season against Wofford Saturday night at the McKenzie Arena. The game will tip off at 5 p.m. as part of a double-header with the men's team.
