Lady Mocs Bring Down Mountaineers to Advance to SoCon Semis

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Chattanooga women's basketball team downed Appalachian State 84-60 Wednesday morning at the North Charleston Coliseum to advance to the semifinal round of the Southern Conference tournament.

The Lady Mcs jumped out to a strong start grabbing a 13-0 lead with just four minutes gone behind the 3-point shooting of Brooke Hand and All-SoCon selection Laura Hall. Chattanooga stretched its lead to 20-4 three minutes later before the Mountaineers would make a climb into the game.

App State put together a 12-1 run to cut the lead to 21-16 with nine minutes to 9:00 to play in the first half. After trading baskets, the Lady Mocs seized control and pushed the lead back to 16 late in the stanza with a 13-2 spurt started by a layup from All-Freshman Team member Jenaya Wade-Fray at the 7:10 mark. Classmate Tagan Hatchett capped the run with a 3-pointer five minutes later to push the lead to 36-20.

“I am extremely proud of our freshmen for going out there and playing so well today,” Lady Mocs Head Coach Wes Moore said. “During pre-conference games, Shanara Hollinquest was a dominating player and then she broke her foot. Now she's back and playing well which is very beneficial for us.”

Hollinquest scored eight points and grabbed three boards in 15 minutes for the Lady Mocs netting one assist and two steals.

Chattanooga shot 57.7 percent on 15-of-26 shooting and carried a 41-27 advantage into the lockerroom at the half. From the 3-point line in the opening period, the Lady Mocs drained 6-of-11.

In the second half, the Mountaineers went 2-for-2 with a pair of free throws to cut the lead to seven, but ASU wouldn't be that close again as the Lady Mocs offense continued to click getting out in front by as much as 28 points in the game.

Chattanooga's led a balanced offensive attack with three players in double figures and 39 points from the bench. Laura Hall led UTC with a 4-for-7 performance from the 3-point line for a team-high 16 points. Alex Anderson, the SoCon Player of the Year, kicked in 12 points and had eight rebounds with four assists, three steals and a blocked shot.

Wade-Fray was the third UTC player with double-digits scoring 10 points and five rebounds. Hand went 3-for-6 from beyond the arc for nine points while Ashley Huff and Hollinquest each chipped in eight. Amy Mohr was 3-for-4 with a 3-pointer for seven points and three assists.

The Lady Mocs outrebounded Appalachian State 38-30 and scored 31 points off 20 ASU miscues.

Whitney Tossie led the Mountaineers with a game-high 17 points while Maria Grimes was held to just one long range bomb for 11 points. Jaime Bennett was one of four App State players with eight points. She notched a team-best seven rebounds while GiGi Thomas added a team-high three assists to her eight points.

Appalachian State shot just 22-of-59 from the floor with three 3-pointers for a 37.3 percent performance on the day.

The Lady Mocs will play the winner of Thursday mornings matchup between No. 3 Davidson and No. 6 Wofford. Chattanooga swept both teams in the regular season. The game will tip off at 2:30 Friday afternoon.
