Lady Mocs Claim Ninth Straight SoCon Title

| By:

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Senior Alex Anderson (Stone Mountain, Ga.) tallied her ninth double-double of the season and tied her career-high for blocked shots to lead the Lady Mocs (24-3, 16-0) to a 62-36 win over the College of Charleston (12-13, 8-7) and their ninth consecutive Southern Conference regular season title. Chattanooga's win streak is now at 19 games and remains the longest in the country.

Anderson scored the first basket of the game and went on to score11 points and snare 13 rebounds. She tied her career-high for blocked shots with seven, four in the first half. She started the game with a layup to lead the Lady Mocs on a 9-2 run. The Cougars clawed back to a three-point deficit at the 13:38 mark and again with 8:42 to play before the Lady Mocs mounted an 11-0 run to lead 27-13. The College scored just two more points the remainder of the half and the Lady Mocs pressed its lead to 34-15 at the half.

In the second half, the Lady Mocs would push their lead up to 30 points on a 12-3 run capped by Brooke Hand's (Moulton, Ala.) second 3-pointer of the game with 12:49 to play in the game. The lead would never dip below 20 for the remainder of the contest as the Lady Mocs held the Cougars to the second lowest opponent scoring total this season behind the 34 scored by Alabama.

Jenaya Wade-Fray (Madison, Ala.) went 4-for-8 on the night with a trio of 3-pointers for a game-high 16 points. Shanara Hollinquest (Sylacauga, Ala.) was 6-of-10 with 12 points while Anderson notched her ninth double-double of the season.

The Cougars were led by Ericka Williams eight points and Deidra Jones six. Sarah Moyed had a team-high six rebounds. The Lady Mos outrebounded the Cougars 47-36 with 16 offensive boards but turned the ball over 22 times to the College's 16.

The Lady Mocs became just the seventh team in NCAA history to win at least nine consecutive conference titles. Old Dominion won 12 from 1993-2004 while UC Santa Barbara (1996-2006) and Connecticut (1994-2004) have claimed 11 apiece. Liberty (1998-2006), Louisiana Tech (1993-2001) and UW-Green Bay have each won nine straight. UW-Green Bay has won its last nine and are in line to win its 10th this year.

This is Chattanooga's 14th regular season title in the last 25 years since the Southern Conference first hosted league championships.

Chattanooga can clinch the title outright with a win in either of its last two games. The Lady Mocs will remain on the road at Georgia Southern. The game will tip off at 7 p.m. at the Hanner Fieldhouse.
