2007-08 Athletics Highlights

VOLLEYBALL
  • Newberry currently holds the top three single-season digs records, having broken her own marks of 736 (2005) and 721 (2006). She finished the 2007 season with 942 digs to break the modern-era NCAA single-season mark of 924. With 2,399 career digs, she is 392 digs away from the NCAA record of 2,791 set by Minnesota's Paula Gentil from 2002-05.

  • Senior middle blocker Leslee Ball named Southern Conference First-Team selection
  • Leslee Ball was named the Southern Conference Volleyball Player of the Week twice, for the Week of September 24-30 and October 22-28. She is only the fourth Chattanooga volleyball player to win the award two times and is the second to accomplish this in the same season.
  • As a team, Chattanooga won seven straight matches from September 15-29, including five straight shutouts. At one point, the Lady Mocs won 11 of 13 matches.
  • Chattanooga posted a 3-2 victory over three-time defending Southern Conference Champion College of Charleston on Oct. 9. This was the first victory over the Cougars in 15 matches and first since November 11, 2000.
  • The Lady Mocs reached the semi-finals of the Southern Conference Tournament before falling to three-time reigning, and eventual champion, College of Charleston, 3-2.

  • Men
    • Southern Conference Runners-Up
    • Michael Mentz (3rd) and Chris Berry (4th) earned All-Conference honors.
    • Chris Berry was named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year
    • Team finished 10th in the NCAA South Region
    • Michael Mentz named All-South Region with a 22nd place finish
  • Women
    • Won back-to-back Southern Conference Championships
    • Bill Gautier earned sixth SoCon Coach of the Year honors.
    • Kathleen Turchin named SoCon Runner of the Year with top place finish at SoCon championhips.
    • Katie Williams (6th) and Shelley Taylor (10th) earned All-Conference honors.
    • Team finished ninth in the NCAA South Region
    • Kathleen Turchin named All-South Region with a 17th place finish
SOCCER
  • Freshman goal keeper Milla Junni was ranked eighth in the nation by the NCAA for saves per game (8.13). In 16 games, she played every minute in goal for UTC and tallied 130 saves.
FOOTBALL
• The football team defeated Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Ga., in September for the first time in school history.
• Senior Chris Camacho was a First-Team All-Southern Conference selection and a Second-Team All-America pick.  He led the SoCon in tackles with 135 and the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision with 96 solo tackles.
• Chris Camacho was the SoCon Defensive Player of the Month for October. The safety averaged 15.8 tackles per game in four games during the month. He set a career-high with 18 tackles in one game and also recorded a safety.  Camacho was also the Defensive Player of the Week for Oct. 13.
• Sophomore Craig Camay was the SoCon Special Teams Co-Player of the Week for his performance in the win at Georgia Southern. He also tied a school single-game record with four field goals Sept. 8 at Jacksonville State.
 
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
  • NCAA first-round participant
  • Senior Alex Anderson was voted the Southern Conference Female Athlete of the Year
  • Southern Conference tournament champions – 12th overall and seventh in eight years
  • Southern Conference regular season champions – 14th overall and ninth straight
  • Held nation's longest active winning streak (Feb. 5 – March 23) at 24 games – third best win streak in school history
  • Went undefeated in Southern Conference regular season for third time in five years
  • Three players are ranked among the nation's best in seven categories.
  • Alex Anderson named SoCon Player of the Year by coaches and media (2nd year)
  • Alex Anderson named SoCon Tournament MVP (2nd year)
  • Only player in league history to garner both in the same year in back-to-back years. Only three players have earned both in the same season.
  • Brooke Hand (coaches) and Shanara Hollinquest (media and coaches) named All-Conference along with Anderson
  • Laura Hall (1st), Shanara Hollinquest (2nd) all named to SoCon All-Tournament team
  • Alex Anderson named SoCon Player of the Month three times
  • Alex Anderson named SoCon Player of the Week six times (ties most in league history – male or female) for second straight year
  • Shanara Hollinquest named SoCon Player of the Week for the first time in her career
  • Alex Anderson (39 vs. Davidson) and Shanara Hollinquest (31 vs. Georgia Southern) each scored more than 30 points in a single game. Only 36 players in school history have accomplished the feat.
  • Brooke Hand became the 22nd member of the Lady Mocs 1,000-point club
  • Alex Anderson became just the second person in school history to record more than 1,000 rebounds. Ended year with 1,010.
  • Brooke Hand closed her career as the Southern Conference's most prolific 3-point shooter (male or female) with 315.
  • Anderson was drafted by the WNBA's San Antonio franchise; Laura Hall was invited to try out for the Connecticut team 
MEN'S BASKETBALL
  • For the 17th year in 31, the Mocs won a SoCon title with its North Division co-Championship.  Since 1977-78, men's basketball has 25 titles (10 regular season, six division and nine tournament).  Davidson is second with 16 (1 regular season, nine division and six tournament).
  • The 18 wins is the third time in four years under John Shulman the Mocs have won 18 or more games.
  • The McKenzie Arena attendance record fell with 11,221 fans packed in to see the Mocs lose a tight one to Tennessee, 76-70, on Dec. 4.  The Mocs led early in the second half, marking the second time early in the season UTC led a top-10 opponent in the second half (at Indiana).
  • The Mocs produced two All-Southern Conference players in Nicchaeus Doaks and Stephen McDowell.
  • Doaks completed the season on a 17-game consecutive double-figure scoring streak.  For the season, Doaks became the eighth player in school history to top 500 rebounds in his career while also scoring his 900th point.  He finished the season with 926 points and 516 rebounds making him the seventh player in school history to achieve both, joining Lance Fulse (1,325 pts/747 reb), Brandon Born (1,449/525), David Phillips (1,157/555), Alphonso Pugh (1,140/530), Stanford Strickland (1,153/529) and Keith Nelson (1,047/523).
  • The McKenzie Arena enjoyed its 25th birthday on Dec. 1, 2007 with an 87-74 Mocs triumph over The Citadel.  On Feb. 23, UTC honored five players as the 25th Anniversary team -- Willie White (1981-84), Gerald Wilkins (1983-85), Lance Fulse (1985-88), Tim Brooks (1992-93) and Brandon Born (1992-95).
  • McDowell earned Southern Conference Player of the Week honors Jan. 14, while Khalil Hartwell earned the award on Dec. 17.  Hartwell became the first player under Shulman to win the award.
  • McDowell ranked 15th in the nation three-pointers made per game (3.5), while Doaks was 21st in field goal percentage (58.8%).  As a team, the Mocs were 21st in rebound margin (+5.7).
  • McDowell set a new season record for three-pointers attempted in a season with 292.
  • Men's basketball made it to its 17th title game in the 18 years of the Dr Pepper Classic.  Kevin Goffney and Nicchaeus Doaks were named to the Dr Pepper Classic All-Tournament team
  • Stephen McDowell completed his undergraduate degree in Finance in December.
  • Redshirt freshman guard Jeff Smith was named an FCA Scholar-Athlete for 2007-08.  The award recognizes his commitment to his varsity sport, academic major and to the principles of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. 
  • Zach Ferrell and Smith are members of the UTC Student-Athlete Advisory Council.
MEN'S GOLF
  • Mocs won their second-straight SoCon title.
  • Jonathan Hodge repeated as the SoCon Player of the Year. He was a second team All-American, the first in program history.
  • Mark Guhne won SoCon Coach of the Year honors for the third season in a row.
  • Hodge, Fredrik Qvicker, Derek Rende and Ben Rickett all made the All-SoCon team.
  • Top Five Golfstat National Ratings going into 2007-08:  1- 47 (2006-07), 2- 107 (1994-95), 3- 111 (1997-98), 4- 112 (2005-06) and 5- 118 (1998-99).  Through 3/26 our Golfstat National Rating for 2007-08 is 11.
  • Through the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, the Mocs record is 98-30-4 (.758) in nine tournaments.  Average finish is tied for fourth.  The team has had 12 par or better rounds through 25 rounds this season.  That's one shy of the school record set last season of 13 (in 37 rounds).
  • Individually in 144 rounds, the Mocs have 59 par or better rounds (40.9%).  Of those 59 rounds, 28 have been in the 60's (47.5%).  Eight of the nine student-athletes have at least one par or better round and a round in the 60's.
  • The Mocs have three wins on the season through 3/30, two seconds and two thirds.
  • Junior Jonathan Hodge has won three titles (Coca-Cola Duke Classic, Cleveland Palmetto Intercollegiate and Furman Intercollegiate) this season, a school record for wins in a season.  He is tied with Bryce Ledford for the school career record with three.
  • In the Golfstat Cup standings (3/25), Hodge ranks No. 29, while Derek Rende is in 39th.  In the Golfweek/Sagarin Ratings Index, Hodge is 38th, followed by Rende (62nd) and Fredrik Qvicker (95th).
  • Won the Coca-Cola Duke Golf Classic on Oct. 7-8 defeating the likes of Duke (on its university course), Notre Dame, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Maryland and Iowa.
  • Through mid-March: 8-0-0 against SoCon opponents with a 366-stroke advantage which is an average win of 45.8 shots per meeting.  Since the 2006 third-place finish at the SoCon Championship, the Mocs are 34-0-0 with a 982-stroke cushion (28.9 shots per meeting).
  • In a two-tournament span during Spring Break, the Mocs were dominating against nationally-ranked opponents.  In capturing the Cleveland Palmetto Intercollegiate, the Mocs beat two top 30 programs in grand fashion topping then-No. 30 Virginia Tech by 30 shots and then-No. 22 Penn State by 40.  Chattanooga followed with a third-place finish in the Linger Longer Invitational which featured seven top 40 programs, four top 20.  The Mocs held a combined 84-stroke advantage over their six top 40 counterparts for the tourney.  For the two tournaments, UTC had a 6-2 record against top 40 programs with a 154-stroke advantage.  Against the top 25 at that time, it was 3-1 (70 shots).
  • Hodge was named SoCon Golfer of the Week (3/12/08).
WOMEN'S GOLF
  • Fall
    • Won first three tournaments in first season returning to competition
    • Kelly Brotherton won individual medalist honors in the Lady Mocs' first tournament – JSU Chris Bannister Gamecock Classic.
    • Emma de Groot had top 10 finishes in all fall tournaments that included three runners-up and one third place finish.
    • The Lady Mocs were named Golfweek Magazine Team of the Week
Spring
  • Emma de Groot and Christine Wolf made the All-SoCon team.
  • De Groot was the SoCon Freshman of the Year.
  • Lady Mocs won the inaugural Larry Nelson Invitational
  • Lady Mocs finished second at the Samford University Intercollegiate
  • Emma de Groot won individual medalist honors in the Samford Intercollegiate and Larry Nelson
  • Lady Mocs finished fifth in the Southern Conference tournament
  • Emma de Groot was named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year
  • Freshmen Emma de Groot and Christine Wolf were named All-Conference
  • Emma de Groot earned an at-large bid to the NCAA East Regional
  • Emma de Groot was twice named SoCon Player of the Week and held a ranking as high as 23rd according to Golfstat.

WRESTLING
• The Mocs claimed their 23rd SoCon Championship title March 8.  No other SoCon member, past or current, has won more than nine league championships.  VMI is the next closest to UTC in number of titles won with nine.
 
• The Mocs earned five individual SoCon titles – Javier Maldonado (125), Cody Cleveland (141), Seth Garvin (157), Lloyd Rogers (174) and Josh Edmondson (184).  All five earned bids to the NCAA Championships, as well as three wildcards – Steve Hromada (133), Joey Knox (149) and Matt Koz (197).
 
• Cody Cleveland was named the SoCon Tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler.  Cleveland, the top seed at 141 pounds, won his first SoCon title with two pins in two matches.
 
• Cody Cleveland earned All-America status at the NCAA Championships by finishing eighth in the 141-pound division.  Chattanooga has produced five wrestling All-Americas since 2005 including two in 2005 and one last year.  Michael Keefe (141) and Jon Sioredas (165) placed fifth in 2005.  Matt Keller, a two-time All-America, finished eighth at 133 pounds in 2006 and fourth a year ago.  The Mocs have produced 24 All-Americas in the program's history, 12 in the Division II era and 12 since joining NCAA Division I in 1978.
 
• Javier Maldonado and Matt Koz each made their third trip to the NCAA Championships.
 
• The Mocs faced a difficult schedule in 2007-08, taking on five ranked teams in their 17 dual matches.  Chattanooga defeated No. 8 Ohio State on Nov. 19.  The Mocs lost to No. 8 Missouri on Dec. 16, to No. 1 Penn State and No. 9 Northwestern on Jan. 12, No. 17 Oklahoma on Jan. 18 and No. 6 Central Michigan on Feb. 17.
 
• In dual match history, Chattanooga has gone through the last four seasons without a Southern Conference defeat.  The Mocs went 5-0 in 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08.  Their last SoCon loss came Feb. 14, 2004 at The Citadel, a 27-13 defeat.
 
• Five UTC wrestlers earned All-Southern Conference honors for the 2007-08 season.  Lloyd Rogers was voted SoCon Co-Wrestler of the Year along with Appalachian State's Scott Ervin.  Rogers led the Mocs with a 24-3 overall record.  He produced a remarkable 16-1 record in dual matches and was undefeated in all five SoCon duals.  Javier Maldonado is an All-SoCon selection for the third consecutive season.  Josh Edmondson picked up his second straight All-SoCon accolade.  First-time All-SoCon honorees for the Mocs are Cody Cleveland at 141 pounds and Seth Garvin at 157.  Head Coach Chris Bono was named the SoCon Coach of the Year for the second year in a row.
 
Steve Hromada and Javier Maldonado were named to the NWCA Academic All-America Team.
 
 
WOMEN'S TENNIS
• Senior Lindsey Ballard captured the Flight B-1 Singles title at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Columbia, S.C. Ballard went undefeated in singles play over the weekend with victories over players from Wofford and Armstrong Atlantic University.
 
The Lady Mocs finished the spring season with an 8-12 record.  They posted wins over in-state schools Lipscomb, Belmont and Austin Peay State as well as conference wins over Appalachian State and Western Carolina.
 
 
MEN'S TENNIS
• The men's tennis doubles team of Razvan Axente and Badr Bouabdellah claimed the top doubles title at the USC Fall Invitational at the University of South Carolina. The duo defeated teams from USC, Arkansas, Louisville and Wake Forest to win the indoor tournament title.
 
Men's tennis player Badr Bouabdellah was named Second-Team All-Southern Conference at the No. 2 singles position.
 
The Mocs finished the year 12-10 overall, highlighted by a seven-match win streak.  The team notched wins over in-state teams Lipscomb, Tennessee-Martin and Austin Peay State and over SoCon teams College of Charleston, Wofford and Georgia Southern.

ACADEMICS
• 117 student-athletes earned a spot on the Athletics Director's Honor Roll in the Fall semester for having a grade point average of 3.0 or better.  The total was 103 in the Spring semester.
 
• 80 of those were members of the Dean's List in the Fall with a 3.2 GPA or better, while 82 made the Dean's List in the Spring.
 
• 21 student-athletes recorded perfect 4.0 GPAs in the Fall, and 17 made the perfect mark in the Spring.
 
• Ten of 17 athletics programs produced cumulative team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the Fall including women's and men's track and cross country, women's basketball, women's and men's tennis and softball.
 
• In the fall, 43 percent of UTC student-athletes earned GPAs of 3.0 or better.  66 percent had GPAs of 2.5 or better.
 
• The football team had 22 members on the Athletics Director's Honor Roll and 11 on the Dean's List.  57 percent of the team earned GPAs of 2.5 or better.

ATTENDANCE
• The men's basketball program saw an increase in home attendance by over 1,000 fans.  In 2006-07, the Mocs drew an average of 3,199 fans to McKenzie Arena.  This past season, an average of 4,233 fans watched the Mocs at home, and that figure ranked second among the 11 Southern Conference teams.
 
• The women's basketball team reported a jump in its home attendance this year from an average of 1,323 per home game in 2006-07 to 1,628 in 2007-08.  The Lady Mocs led the Southern Conference in home attendance and were the only SoCon team to eclipse 1,000 for their average.
 
• The wrestling program ranked 15th nationally in average attendance this past season.  The Mocs averaged 975 fans for six home dates in 2007-08 and drew a season-high 1,600 fans for its Dec. 16 matchup with No. 8-ranked Missouri.
The Mocs ranked ahead of Hofstra (935) and Northern Iowa (888).
