CULLOWHEE, N.C. --- Three Chattanooga players notched career-highs as the Lady Mocs defeated Western Carolina 84-71 in Southern Conference women's basketball action Monday night at the Ramsey Center and claimed a share of the SoCon lead.
The win moves Chattanooga to 11-6 overall and into a tie with Davidson for first at 7-1 in the SoCon after the Wildcats fell to the College of Charleston at Belk Arena. The Catamounts drop to 8-7 overall and even their SoCon mark at 4-4.
Senior Erin Ogan led all scorers with a career-best 18 points and had a game-high eight rebounds. Freshman Andrea Neil and junior Tagan Hatchett each sank four 3-pointers for career-high nights. Neil had 16 points while Hatchett had 13 making all of her shots from beyond the arc.
Junior Shanara Hollinquest had 17 points and was 5-of-6 from the charity stripe while classmate Jenaya Wade-Fray was the fifth Chattanooga player in double digits with 11 points hitting all six of her free throw attempts.
Chattanooga was 28-for-60 from the field including a 47.8 percent 3-point effort making a season-high 11 from beyond the arc. The Lady Mocs were 17-of-21 from the free throw line for an 81.0 percent effort.
Western Carolina jumped out to a seven-point lead to start the game and pushed its advantage to 22-13 on a 3-pointer from Brooke Johnson at the 11:54 mark. The Lady Mocs turned on the offense and outscored the Cats 11-2 over the next five minutes knotting the game at 24-24 on Neil's first 3-pointer.
WCU took the lead back briefly on a lay-in by Kaila'Shea 26 seconds later, but Ogan would become a one-man wrecking crew making the next seven points in a 9-0 run to give UTC a 33-26 lead with 3:27 to play in the half. Chattanooga carried a 37-32 advantage into halftime.
The Catamounts started the second half with the ball and scored scored quickly on a layup from Jessica Johnson. She would then get a steal and feed the ball to teammate Lauren Powell to cut the lead to 37-36 just 43 seconds into the half.
However, the tide would swing back to Chattanooga's favor on back-to-back 3-pointers from Hatchett who put UTC up 48-39 at the 16:20 mark. The Lady Mocs made five more 3-pointers throughout the second half and would build its lead to 83-68 with just 19 seconds remaining in the game.
Chattanooga outrebounded the Catamounts 40-33 and scored 15 points off 14 Western Carolina turnovers. The Lady Mocs pulled down 12 offensive rebounds and scored 21 second chance points compared to WCU's four points on 10 offensive boards.
The Lady Mocs will return home for a four-game home stand beginning with league-leading Davidson on Saturday, Jan. 17 for Hoops for Hunger Night with Chattanooga Basketball at McKenzie Arena. Fans bringing 2 cans of non perishable food items will receive one free general admission ticket to the game. The Lady Mocs take on Davidson at 5:00 p.m. while the men's squad faces Western Carolina at 7:30 p.m. Fans attending the women's game will also be able to stay for the men's contest
