STATESBORO, Ga. --- Shanara Hollinquest was fouled on a layup and sank her free throw to give the Lady Mocs a one-point lead with 21 seconds remaining in the game Saturday afternoon at the Hanner Fieldhouse, but the Eagles' Jamie Navarro hit a jumper from the wing to give Georgia Southern a 66-65 win over Chattanooga and snap the Lady Mocs' 27-game Southern Conference win streak.
Chattanooga falls to 9-6 overall and 5-1 in league play while the Eagles improve to 9-5 overall and 4-1 in SoCon action.
The Lady Mocs trailed 35-27 at halftime and Georgia Southern quickly pushed its lead into double figures on a jumper from Jessica Geiger. The Eagles led 42-30 with 17:17 to play, but it was a lead the Lady Mocs would chip away at throughout the remainder of the game.
Jenaya Wade-Fray led all scorers with a season-high 21 points and hit a trio of 3-pointers to start the second half that cut Georgia Southern's lead to six points with 15:08 to play. Shanara Hollinquest, who had 20 points in the game combined with Wade-Fray to cut the lead to 44-42 at the 11:27 mark.
Just over two minutes later, Erin Ogan sank a 3-pointer from the top of the key to get the Lady Mocs to within a point, 48-47, with 9:07 to go in the game. Hollinquest, with a chance to put UTC on top for the first time in more than 18 minutes of play, was called for a walk on a layup.
Over the next four minutes, the Eagles would outscore the Lady Mocs 9-1 to get its lead back up to 57-48 with just 5:28 to play. The Lady Mocs outscored Georgia Southern 17-7 over the next 5:07 and take the lead on a free throw from Hollinquest with just 21 seconds left to play.
Despite strong man-to-man pressure, Navarro found an opening and sunk a jumper with just seven seconds to play. Andrea Neil last second jumper fell short of keeping Chattanooga's conference record unblemished.
Wade-Fray, with four 3-pointers, led four Chattanooga players in double figures. Hollinquest just missed a double-double with 20 points and nine boards. Erin Ogan, 3-4 from the 3-point line, had 11 points and LaCondra Mason had 10 points.
The Lady Mocs scored 21 points off 18 Eagles turnovers and had 12 second chance points on 10 offensive rebounds.
Georgia Southern had 17 points from Ashley Rivens and 12 points from J'Lisia Ogburn. She and Navarro had a team-high six rebounds.
Chattanooga will travel to the College of Charleston (8-4, 2-3 SoCon) for a league game on Monday at 7 p.m. at the new Carolina First Arena.
