NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After a week off, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team defeated Tennessee State, 3-1 (27-25, 25-22, 17-25, 25-13) Tuesday night. Sophomore outside hitter Laura Brock (Chattanooga, Tenn.) recorded her first career double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs as the Lady Mocs notched their third victory of the season, while Tennessee State fell to 1-6.
Junior Bailee Chastain (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) and senior Cassie Conner (Willow Springs, Ill.) shared the setting role tonight with Chastain assisting on 17 kills and Conner recorded 10.
Sophomore middle blocker Ellie Kuhn (San Antonio, Texas) posted seven kills on ten attempts for a .700 attacking percentage and set a career-high with five blocks on the night. Junior Courtney Barnes recorded nine kills and three blocks to help Chattanooga offensively.
Sophomore right side Stephanie Harville (Morristown, Tenn.) notched seven kills and two assists. Brock also recorded four assists and four blocks, which both are career highs for the Chattanooga, Tenn., native.
A major difference in the match was the team attacking percentages. Chattanooga hit .197, while the hosts only converted .084 percent of the time. The Lady Mocs registered a total of nine team blocks and two service aces.
In the first set, Chattanooga raced out to a 12-7 lead over the Tigers, before Tennessee State battled back and eventually took the lead 19-17. The Tigers used a 10-point rally with their setter Vicmari Prospero at the service line. Tennessee State would go up 23-19, and then Chattanooga went on a rally of its own to tie the match at 24-all. The Lady Mocs went on to win the crucial first set after a Tigers' service error and a Barnes kill, 27-25.
The second set seemed to be a battle of wills because both teams were not converting on their chances. Each team recorded numerous errors as UTC hit .026, but the errors really hut Tennessee State, who ended up hitting -.111. The Tigers registered 14 errors in that set.
After a ten minute intermission, Tennessee State came out of the locker room and raced to a 14-7 advantage. The Tigers took the set 25-17, but Chattanooga still commanded a 2-1 lead. This set was the only set of the match where the Lady Mocs were out hit .162 to .069. The fourth set was even for the first 15 points, but the Lady Mocs got control of the set with a 13-7 lead. Chattanooga was able to cruise to victory after taking a commanding 20-13 lead and took the match 3-1 with a 25-14 win.
The Lady Mocs host the Country Inn & Suites Invitational this weekend at Maclellan Gym. Chattanooga opens the tournament on Friday against Austin Peay and continues action Saturday with a match versus SIU-Edwarsville at noon.
