CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team notched its first Southern Conference victory of the season against Western Carolina in come-from-behind fashion taking the final three sets, 3-1 (23-25, 28-26, 25-17, 25-12). The Lady Mocs were down 22-17, mounted a 6-1 rally to knot the score at 23 and eventually picked up the 28-26 win.

The offense flowed through the middle for Chattanooga as senior Courtney Barnes (Franklin, Tenn.) posted 19 kills without an error for a .593 hitting percentage and junior Ellie Kuhn (San Antonio, Texas) notched 10. Sophomores Meagan Ernd (Munster, Ind.) recorded nine kills and Kirsten Beasley (Amarillo, Texas) added nine and five kills, respectively.

Two Lady Mocs posted double-doubles in the contests as sophomore outside Heather Parman (Ooltewah, Tenn.) compiled 11 kills and 10 digs, while senior Bailee Chastain (Chattanooga, Tenn.) totaled 50 assists and 11 digs.

An all-around defensive effort led by sophomore libero Paula Passmore (Merritt Island, Fla.) with a match-high 26 digs was used by the Lady Mocs in recording 81 digs. Four individuals hit double-digits in digs including senior right side Jessica Scott (14), Chastain (11) and Parman (12), while Ernd and Beasley aided in the effort with six and seven, respectively.

Another aspect to the defense was consistent blocking as Barnes stopped four attacks and Kuhn had three. Both teams totaled seven blocks during the match.

Chattanooga (6-15, 1-4 SoCon) registered 63 kills in the victory, 20 more than Western Carolina (7-15, 1-5 SoCon). The Lady Mocs also hit at least 14 kills in each set including a match-high 17 in the final stanza on only a single error.

Before the Lady Mocs hit their stride in the third set, the team caused 21 ties and nine lead changes through the first two sets.

The first frame began as Chattanooga rallied from two down to knot the score at six on a kill by Ernd. The Catamounts opened a 16-12 advantage, but the Lady Mocs fought back to take the lead at 18-17 on a kill by Kuhn. Following ties at 20, 21, 22 and 23, Western Carolina was able to close the set on two mistakes, 25-35.

In the second set, sophomore right side Christina Teter (Signal Mountain, Ten.) posted a kill providing the Lady Mocs with a 4-2 advantage. From there, Western Carolina proceeded to build a 22-14 lead.

An impressive comeback that saw the momentum shift to the Lady Mocs began with consecutive kills by Kuhn followed by a WCU mistake. With the score at 23-19, Barnes connected on three-straight kills to come within one, then an attack error from Western Carolina tied it up.

The Catamounts generated a kill and had set point, but Chastain found a void in the defense on the second ball and an attack error gave Chattanooga a 25-24 advantage causing a WCU timeout. A kill from Amanda Chaparro tied the set up, but then a service error provided Chattanooga with another advantage. Paloma Alvarez responded with a kill, but it was not enough as kills by Parman and Ernd closed the frame 28-26.

With a new found confidence, Chattanooga built 4-2 lead in the third set on a kill by Ernd and stretched it to three on back-to-back kills by Barnes, 11-8. Another kill from Barnes and service ace from Chastain added to the lead at 20-16. Chattanooga would score on the final five rallies of the frame on kills by Parman and two by Barnes, 25-17.

The momentum continued for the Lady Mocs in the fourth set as they scored the first six points on three kills by Parman and two by Barnes. Chattanooga never looked back in posting a 25-12 victory capped on kills by Ernd, Beasley and Kuhn.

The squad played with heavy hearts in earning the victory for their head coach Lisa Rhodes, who has been away from the team with the loss of her mother.

Chattanooga is back in action on Sunday against Appalachian State. The first serve from Maclellan Gym is scheduled for 5 p.m.
