Chattanooga Claims 73-69 Road Win at Kennesaw State

| By:

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's basketball team claimed a hard-fought 73-69 road win at Kennesaw State (2-1) Wednesday night in the KSU Convocation Center.  Chattanooga (1-2) came back from seven points down in the second half to grab its first win of 2010-11.

Senior DeAntre Jefferson (Bloomington, Ill.) led the Mocs with 16 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.  Josh Odem (Johnson City, Tenn.) had 14 points off the bench.

It was another nail-biter for Chattanooga.  After Monday's three-point loss on a final possession three-pointer by Austin Peay, the Mocs went down to the wire again tonight with KSU.

The Owls led by seven, 41-34, with 15:18 remaining on a LaDaris Green three-pointer.  Down 45-40, UTC went on a 12-2 run to go up by five, 52-47, on a three-pointer by Omar Wattad (Johnson City, Tenn.).

KSU added five straight to knot the game at 52-52 with 9:51 remaining on a Mirza Sabic free throw,  The game would be tied five more times in the see-saw affair.

Kennesaw State looked to be in control when Kevin McConnell's high arching three-pointer made it 66-62 KSU with 3:31 left.  But the Mocs did not shy away from adversity.

Ricky Taylor's (Brownsville, Tenn.) three-point play gave UTC a 69-66 lead at 2:03.  Spencer Dixon hit another trey for KSU to tie it at 69-all at 1:41, but it was all Chattanooga down the stretch.  Jefferson's layup with 1:24 remaining gave the Mocs the lead for good.  Odem calmly hit two free throws with 4.6 to play to provide the final margin of 73-69.

Odem's 14 points keyed a 28-11 advantage in bench points for UTC.  He hit 3-4 shots from the field including both three-point attempts and all six from the free throw line.

KSU's Markeith Cummings led all scorers with 26 points.  Dixon added 17, with Green chipping in 12.  The Owls scored 21 of their points at the charity stripe making 80.8 percent of their 26 attempts.

Junior Keegan Bell (Hazel Green, Ala.) had seven assists against just two turnovers, while Wattad had a season-high six dimes with just two turnovers of his own.  Sophomore Dontay Hampton (Chattanooga, Tenn.) had a huge impact on the game with solid play in reserve of Bell in foul trouble.

As a team, Chattanooga had 20 assists and just 10 turnovers.  The Mocs also held a 35-33 advantage on the glass behind Jefferson's 10.

The road show continues for the Mocs as they head to Huntington, W. Va., Saturday for a matchup with former heated rival Marshall.  Game time at the Henderson Center has changed to 7:30 p.m.  Live stats and audio can be found at GoMocs.com as Jim Reynolds calls all the exciting action on ESPN 105.1 FM in Chattanooga.
