Lady Mocs Get 65-49 Win Over Lee

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's basketball team jumped out to a 16-0 lead in its exhibition matchup against No. 7 Lee University Thursday night at the McKenzie and came away with a 65-49 win.
Sophomore Kayla Christopher (Oliver Springs, Tenn.) and junior Whitney Hood (Meridian, Miss.) combined for 11 of those points and junior Bailey Dewart (Spartanburg, S.C.) got her first points in more than a year with a quick jumper in the lane to start the game.
Hood finished with a team-high 20 points and just missed a double-double, hauling in a game-high eight boards. Christopher went 3-for-7 from the 3-point line and dished out four assists for 15 points while junior Tenisha Townsend nailed a trio of 3-pointers for 14 points on the night.
Lee got on the board with 14:20 to go in the first half on a layup from Hollie German, but Townsend scored six points over the next 28 seconds to stretch Chattanooga's lead to 22-2. Lee's scoring woke up and the Lady Flames held even with the Lady Mocs over the remainder of the first half and Chattanooga, with a 51.7 shooting percentage, led 41-19 at the break.
The Lady Mocs started the second half with a pair of 3-pointers from Christopher and a layup from Hood to extend its lead to the largest of the game at 49-21. However, Lee outscored the Lady Mocs 30-24 in the second half with 17 points by Brooke McKinnon who led all scorers with 23 points.
The Lady Flames made a run toward the end of the game to cut the lead back in to the teams with a 12-1 run over a four minute stretch cutting the lead to its closest of the second half at 59-46. Sophomore Kylie Lambert (Etowah, Tenn.) drained a 3-pointer with 3:21 to play to give UTC a 63-46 lead. Moore put all five freshman on the court to close out the final moments of play.
The Lady Mocs outscored Lee in the paint 32-20 and scored 19 points off 16 turnovers. Chattanooga pulled down 39 boards to Lee's 30 and scored 12 points off 12 offensive rebounds. Lee's Hollie German had 12 points for the Lady Flames while McKinnon had four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
