Match Notes: - |
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
volleyball team came together as a team pulling out a come-from-behind victory against
UCF, 3-2 (8-25, 22-25, 25-22, 28-26, 15-8), but would split the day after dropping a match to James Madison, 3-0 (25-15, 15-18, 15-14), in the second day of the Country
Inns & Suites Invitational at Maclellan Gym.
“It was an amazing comeback after dropping the first set,” said
head coach Lisa Rhodes. “It showed that we still had some fight in us to come
back against UCF. Maybe, there was just too quick of a turnaround after that
kind of emotional win in facing a very talented Jams Madison team.”
The Lady Mocs came back from four match points against the Knights
in the fourth set thanks to two blocks late by sophomore Ellie Kuhn (San
Antonio, Texas) to force a fifth set. Then, they went on a tear to start the
frame rolling out to an 8-2 victory.
“Her blocking was phenomenal,” said Rhodes. “We would not have
even been in a fifth set with UCF if she had not gotten those blocks towards
the end of the fourth. Her blocking and confidence level in hitting has come
around, which makes her want the ball. We need people that want the ball, step
up and make the plays when called upon.”
In the UCF match, Kuhn tied a season-high with eight blocks and
lead the team with 14 during the tournament. She was named to the
all-tournament team along with Kristen Fisher from UCF, Natalie Abel and Tara
Blood from Belmont and Lindsay Callahan and Natalie Abel from James Madison.
The Dukes Danielle Erb was named the MVP of the Country Inns & Suites
Invitational.
The Lady Mocs return to the Maclellan Gym floor on Wednesday at
7:30 p.m. against East Tennessee State. It is the final tune up for Chattanooga
before heading to Elon and UNC Greensboro this weekend to open Southern
Conference play.
Match One: Chattanooga 3, UCF 2
After dropping the first two sets against UCF, the Chattanooga
volleyball team came together as a team and battled its way back into the match
to pick up a 15-8 victory in the fifth set. The Lady Mocs overcame four match
points in the fourth set to pick up the, 3-2 (8-25, 23-25, 25-22, 28-26, 15-8),
victory.
Kuhn paced the Lady Moc offense with 12 kills along
with eight assisted blocks, while fellow sophomore Meagan Ernd (Munster, Ind.) recorded her best
match of the season with nine kills and hitting .450.
“Blocking is really tricky,” said Kuhn. “I have some great outsides
and right sides that help set me up for them. I do feel when you get a block, the
momentum leans towards your team. I love doing it for the team because it gets
you pumped up and helps your defense out.”
On the right side, sophomore Christina Teter (Signal Mountain, Tenn.)
registered 10 kills and six total blocks, while senior Courtney Barnes (Franklin, Tenn.) and
sophomore Heather Parman (Ooltewah, Tenn.) added eight
kills.
“I think we are deep on the outside,” said Rhodes. “The returning sophomores
stepped up and they should be in that position.”
The Lady Mocs counted on their defense during the
comeback as sophomore libero Paula Passmore (Merritt Island, Fla.) totaled
her fifth 30-dig match. Senior Jessica Scott (Lawrence, Kan.) and Parman each
added 10 digs and freshman outside hitter Jennifer Kuroski (Acworth, Ga.) registered
eight.
In the first set, UCF began with a 6-1 advantage
before the Lady Mocs called timeout to regroup, but the Knight continued on the
attack stretching their lead to 15-4. Chattanooga was unable to get into a
rhythm as UCF took a 1-0 lead in the match, 25-8.
The Lady Mocs showed up from the start during the
second set taking their first lead of the match at 9-8. They powered their way
to a 22-19 lead behind the offensive play of Kuhn and Kuroski. UCF came back to
take a 23-22 lead after a Chattanooga timeout and recorded a 25-23 victory in
the set.
Starting the third set, the Knight jumped out to a 7-1
advantage, but the Lady Mocs battled back to cut the lead down to four, 15-11.
Chattanooga continued to put pressure on UCF and was down two, 19-17, following
a service ace by Scott. The Lady Mocs tied the set with a kill by Barnes at 20
and would go on to take it, 25-22, to cut into the Knights 2-1 lead.
“I think we got our confidence back because our serve-receive passing
was better,” said Parman. “There are some really good servers on UCF. Once that
came together, everything else came naturally for us because we are a great
hitting team and have some great setters. Everything starts with the pass.”
Both teams started back and forth in the fourth set as
it was tied up at four-all. The Knights went on to take a 11-7 lead, but the
Lady Mocs rallied to scored four points in a row making it 15-13. After a
timeout, UCF went on to take a 22-16 advantage, but Chattanooga continued to
fight scoring five of the next six points.
UCF had match point at 24-21, but the Lady Mocs used
kills from Parman and Scott and then an assisted block by Kuhn and Scott tied the
set at 24. The Knights received another match point after a UTC mistake, but
Chattanooga knotted it the set at 25 and 26 before consecutive UCF mistakes
provided with a 28-26 win.
After coming back from dropping the first two sets in
a match and falling the North Florida and Charleston Southern last weekend, the
Lady Mocs began the fifth set scoring the first four points and rallied to an
8-2 lead on kills from Parman (3) and Teter, while capitalizing on their
opponent's mistakes. Chattanooga would go on to win its fourth match of the
season and second in a fifth set as Kuhn capped the comeback with a kill for
the 15-8 victory.
“Playing these tough teams have benefitted us and helped us finish
the match,” said Parman. “It helped us to fight for it. The fifth set really
showed how much we have come together as a team, so far this season.”
For the Knights, Fisher posted 25 kills, but the Lady
Mocs were able to force 16 mistakes for the outside hitter. Libero Meredith
Murphy lead the match with 31 digs.
Match Two: James Madison 3, Chattanooga 0
In playing back-to-back matches, the Lady Mocs were unable
to continue their momentum against James Madison falling, 3-0, to the eventual
tournament champions. Kuroski led the offensive charge with six
kills, while 16 digs for Passmore paced the match.
The setter for Chattanooga, Kosycarz and Chastain,
split the match with them recording 12 and six assists, respectively.
Providing the defense along with Passmore was Kuroski,
Kosycarz and Scott with 9, 7 and 6, respectively. Kuhn added three block assists,
while Parman and Teter registered two each.
In the first set, the Lady Mocs used the momentum from
their match against UCF in taking a 9-6 advantage against the Dukes. That lead
would be short lived as James Madison would tie it up at 10 and go on to take a
1-0 lead with 25-15 victory.
The second and third sets were similar to the first as
Chattanooga would hang with James Madison for the first half of the set, before
the Dukes would take control is scoring 25-18 and 25-14 victories,
respectively.
Erb recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 12
digs, while Callahan also reached that feat with 11 kills and 12 digs.
