CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Junior outside Heather Parman
(Ooltewah, Tenn.) registered her 11th career double-double and third this
season with 11 kills and 13 digs as the Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team won
the second set in a 3-1 (25-12, 19-25, 25-16, 25-15) loss to Samford, who is currently in first place of the
Southern Conference North Division.
"Playing all-the-way around is something I really enjoy
because if I am not playing well in the front row," said Parman. "Then I have
an opportunity to make up for it by making great digs and providing an
aggressive serve. Tonight, our defense was able to pick up some hard driven
balls, which is an area that we have been working on."
Along with Parman, sophomore outside Jennifer Kuroski
(Acworth, Ga.) also totaled 11 kills in the match for Chattanooga (5-22, 3-8
SoCon). Registering 10 kills was junior middle blocker Christina Teter (Signal
Mountain, Tenn.), while sophomore Aneisha Christie (Alpharetta, Ga.) added six
against Samford (22-3, 9-3 SoCon).
"We need our outsides to have an efficiency percentage of
around 200, and Heather was just off of that," said head coach Travis Filar. "When
Heather decides to stay aggressive with her swings, she can be very successful,
but she had a great all-around night."
The Mocs offense was set up by sophomore Bridget Camacho
(Cumming, Ga.) with 32 assists along with contributing three kills in the Southern Rail Rivalry.
Leading the Chattanooga back row was freshman libero Melissa
Green (Boca Raton, Fla.), who tied a match-high 17 digs along with the Bulldogs'
Chelsi Carter. Kuroski contributed six digs and sophomore defensive specialist
Andrea Johnson (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) had five.
"I said going into this week to the team that we are going
to face the two best teams [Furman and Samford] in the conference at this point," said Filar.
"They are currently playing the most consistent volleyball. When Samford is on and in
system, they have a very aggressive and potent offense. Every single one of their
hitters can have big nights."
Samford was paced by Michaela Reesor with 16 kills, while
Katie Murphy and Elizabeth Neisler each totaled 12. Setter Casey Garvey tallied
47 assists and 11 digs for a double-double.
The match began with the two teams trading the first 12
points in the first set before Samford jumped out to a 17-8 advantage and went
on to close out the set, 25-12.
Chattanooga continued to fight and opened the second frame
with a 7-3 aided by kills from Teter and Christie along with capitalizing on a
series of Samford mistakes.
From there the Bulldogs came back to within three, 13-10. An
opposing service error began a 7-2 run for the Mocs to close out the set, 25-19
as Teter and Camacho added kills.
"We were able to sustain the lead because we didn't give our
opponents points and sided out quickly," said Filar. "We sided out at 80
percent, which is the best that we have done this season. Our passing was
solid, but our hitters were taking care of the ball, while making aggressive swings."
The Mocs were out-killed by the Bulldogs, 12-11, in the frame, but were very efficient commiting just three mistakes to the eight by their opponent. Siding out 16 out of 20 opportunities also provided Chattanooga to be successful as five players recorded atleast one kill.
"I felt like we made a lot of mistakes in the first set,"
said Filar. "We understood and learned from that in the second set. We had some
great success in getting our opponent of system, but also not giving them
points.
Coming out of the intermission, Samford took control of the match
opening with a 6-1 run. The Mocs would cut the lead to three, 9-6, on a killy
by Kuroski, but Samford would go on to take the third set, 25-16.
"This is where we have to grow because it is the learning
curve," said Filar. "We have to understand what has been successful and continue
to do it. We completely went away from what provided us success in the second
set. We started to challenge their block and made a lot of unforced errors in
the third and fourth sets.
Chattanooga
did register 13 kills as Kuroski, Parman and Teter had four each, but were
hindered by 11 errors.
"We just have to come out with consistency and play the same
way that we did in the second set throughout the match," added Parman.
During the fourth set, Chattanooga used an ace from Teter to
cut the score to one, 7-6, but the Bulldogs went on a 6-2 run and did not look
back in closing out the match, 25-15.
The Mocs return to the court on Nov. 3-4 traveling to UNCG
and Elon. Chattanooga battles the Spartans Friday at 6 p.m. before facing the
Phoenix the following day at 7 p.m.
