BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team
dropped its fifth-straight match on Wednesday night at Samford (15-2, 2-2
SoCon), 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-16), at the Pete Hannah Center. Sophomore setter
Bridget Camacho (Cumming, Ga.) ran the Mocs (2-16, 0-4) offense totaling 20 assists during the
match.
"We fought with them point for point tonight in each set for
the first 10-15 points," said head coach Travis Filar. "If we had that same
fight at the beginning of sets in some of our most recent matches, I believe that
those matches would have gone a different way. Hopefully, we can take the same fight to start tonight and allow that to be momentum going into a huge weekend at home against two division opponents [UNCG and Elon]."
Registered seven and six kills to lead Chattanooga was
junior middle blocker Christina Teter (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) and freshman
outside Kasey Talley (Boiling Springs, S.C.), respectively. Adding four kills
each were outsides junior Heather Parman (Ooltewah, Tenn.) and sophomore
Jennifer Kuroski (Acworth, Ga.).
The Mocs defense was led by junior libero Paula Passmore
(Merritt Island, Fla.) with seven digs, while freshman defensive specialist
Melissa Green (Boca Raton, Fla.) had six. Camacho and Kuroski each contributed
five digs.
Recording her first solo block of the season and second
career was Kuroski, who led Chattanooga along with Talley with two total
blocks.
Three Bulldogs Elizabeth Neisler, Katie Murphy and Lauren
Hutchison hit double-digits in kills as Neisler paced the match with 12. Casey
Carvey totaled 42 assists and Alexis Bauer had 17 digs.
"Samford is an extremely physical and
athletic team," said Filar. "Its offense executed at a high-level tonight making it difficult
for us to get in a rhythm with our passing game. We have to be more aggressive
in every facet of the game, especially with our team defense."
The Mocs notched the first two points of the match before
Samford tied it at two. Following ties at 3,4 and 5, the Bulldogs pulled ahead,
but a kill by Teter kept the Mocs close at 9-7. It was all Samford after that
as it went on a 16-8 to close out the frame, 25-15.
A kill and service ace by Talley enabled Chattanooga to
begin the second frame with a 3-0 lead. Samford came back to knot it at five
and the teams then traded the next four points. The Bulldogs offense continued
to click and it would take the set 25-15 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Coming out of the intermission, Samford led the third set
from the start and notched a 25-16 victory to conclude the match.
Chattanooga returns to Maclellan Gym for a four-match
homestand beginning on Saturday at 7 p.m. against UNCG. The Mocs' Dig Pink
match is set for Sunday at 2 p.m. against Elon with promotions including pink
T-shirts (100), pink rally towels (100) and pink lanyards (250) in support of
breast cancer awareness.
