CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - After the Chattanooga Mocs volleyball
team earned a 2-1 lead in the match, UNCG (10-12, 2-4 SoCon) fought back to force a fifth set and
took a 5-1 lead in that frame before the Mocs (3-16, 1-4 SoCon) battled back to record their first
Southern Conference victory of the season, 3-2 (25-14, 21-25, 25-21, 11-25,
15-11). Junior middle blocker Christina Teter (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) and
sophomore outside hitter Jennifer Kuroski (Acworth, Ga.) led the Mocs offense
with 16 and 15 kills, respectively.
"It feels awesome to pick up a victory tonight because we
worked so hard this week in practice," said Kuroski. "We were really focused on
fighting for every ball and point. It really showed tonight in how we played."
At times, Chattanooga has had difficulties in finding a
third offensive threat, but on Saturday night at Macellan Gym, freshman outside
hitter Kasey Talley (Boiling Spring, S.C.) stepped up posting a season-best 14
kills and hitting at a .481 rate.
"Tonight, Kasey was phenomenal," said head coach Travis Filar. "She was huge for us in taking so many swings and only committing one
error as a freshman. We could not have asked for more. She got some big kills
at key times and was also a very disciplined blocker, too."
Recording her fifth-career double-double was sophomore
setter Bridget Camacho (Cumming, Ga.) totaling 43 assists and 11 digs. Adding
six kills for Chattanooga was junior outside hitter Heather Parman (Ooltewah,
Tenn.)
Junior libero Paula Passmore (Merritt Island, Fla.) headed
up the defensive effort with 22 digs. Amassing 13 digs for the Mocs was
freshman defensive specialist Melissa Green (Boca Raton, Fla.), while Kuroski
just missed a double-double with nine digs.
Two Spartans recorded double-doubles in Karrian Chambers
with 16 kills and 13 digs and Ariel
Newman with 11 kills and 13 digs. Ari Lysacek registered 32 assists, while Kellie
Orewiler totaled a match-high 31 digs.
The teams battled to 30 ties and 11 lead changes with the
third set providing the most drama as 14 ties and four lead changes occurred.
In the first frame, UNCG took a 4-2 lead, but the Mocs
fought back to take a 6-4 lead on a kill by Talley. Chattanooga would stretch
the advantage to 10-6 on another kill by Talley before the Spartans fought back
to tie it at 11.
With the home team holding a slight 14-13 lead, Chattanooga
used the strong serving of Passmore and Camacho to finish out the set on an
11-2 run, 25-12. The Mocs registered 11 kills with Talley leading the way with
five
The first 23 points of the second set went back and forth as
a kill from Teter put the Mocs down one at 12-11 before the Spartans won
three-straight points. An ace by Camacho brought Chattanooga to within one
again at 15-16, but UNCG continued to build its lead. The Mocs were within
two-points of the lead late, but the Spartans closed out the frame with a 25-21
victory.
Coming out of the intermission, the two squads once again
battled for the first 16 points, but Chattanooga went on a run to take a 12-8
lead on a kill by Teter. The Spatans came back to knot the frame at 14 forcing
a UTC timeout.
With the match all square at 19, Parman posted a huge kill
for a side out and allowed Chattanooga to build a 22-19 lead on a Teter kill. The
Mocs would go on to take a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-21 victory. It was a
15-kill performance for Chattanooga as Teter recorded six kills in the frame.
"When we don't make errors," said Filar. "I think that
tonight the team realized how good we can be and how much pressure we can
put on our opponents. To get the third set was very important."
UNCG came out in the fourth set and took control from the
start in earning a 10-5 lead and went on to take the set, 25-11.
After the Spartans went up 5-1 in the decisive fifth set,
Chattanooga called timeout as coach Filar looked to have his team regroup.
"I told the team to just relax," said Filar. "We just need
to pass to get us in system and make some good swings. We passed really well
after that and got the ball to Teter in key situations. We had forgotten what
had gotten us there in earning a 2-1 lead."
The Mocs responded as they would use kills by Teter and two
from Kuroski to take an 8-7 lead. Chattanooga stretched its lead to 12-8 on a
Spartans' mistake and went on to close out the match on a kill by Teter, 15-11.
Sunday at 2 p.m. against Elon is Chattanooga's Dig Pink
