CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Junior outside Heather Parman
(Ooltewah, Tenn.) posted a career-high 26 kills along with 10 digs, her the ninth
career double-double, for the Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team against UNC
Asheville in a 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22) defeat to conclude the Country
Inns & Suites Invitational on Saturday. The Mocs started the day dropping a
hard fought match to Tennessee Tech, 3-2 (25-17, 25-19, 27-29, 19-25, 15-13). Sophomore
Jennifer Kuroski (Acworth, Ga.) registered 44 kills on the weekend and was
named to the all-tournament team.
Chattanooga continued to see improvement in the team's
all-around performance on the court as the two matches combined for 53 ties and
25 lead changes. The Mocs also notched atleast 10 kills in each set, while
limiting their mistakes on the offensive end.
Surpassing a career-high in each match on Saturday was
junior right side Christina Teter (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) with 16 and 17
kills, respectively. The Signal Mountain, Tenn., native was effective in
committing just five mistakes combined in the two contests for a .415 hitting
pct.
A career-best during the match against the Bulldogs was
achieved by sophomore setter Tess Kosycarz (Temecula, Calif.) with 61 assists.
Leading the attack against the Golden Eagles was Kuroski
with 19 kills, while Parman and freshman outside Jessi Blackstock (Killen,
Ala.) added nine and eight each. Kosycarz tallied 44 assists running the Mocs
offense.
The defense for the Mocs was consistent in both matches as
junior libero Paula Passmore (Merritt Island, Fla.) totaled 23 digs against Tennessee
Tech and a season-high 37 vs. the Bulldogs. Also hitting double-figures in digs
was freshman Melissa Green (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Parman with a total of 41 and
20, respectively.
Chattanooga's blocking game totaled 10 blocks against the Golden
Eagles with freshman middle blocker Kasey Talley (Boiling Springs, S.C.) and
Teter registering four each. Teter contributed three solo blocks in the second match,
while three block assists were added by
Blackstock.
To open the morning, the Mocs tallied 11 kills in the first
two frames that they dropped. Chattanooga's offense picked up the pace in the
next frame notching 16 kills in a thrilling 29-27 victory.
The Mocs sent the match in to a decisive fifth set with a
25-19 victory in the fourth taking advantage of 11 mistakes by Tennessee Tech.
The Golden Eagles were too much as they built a three-point lead at 14-11, but
the Mocs would score the next two points before falling.
In the afternoon match against a fresh UNC Asheville team
that played two contests on Friday, the Bulldogs registered a 25-20 victory in
the first committing just a single error on 14 kills as the Mocs had 15 kills.
Chattanooga would go on to post 18 kills in the second frame, but the Bulldogs would
escape with a 25-23 win, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
Following the intermission, Chattanooga continued to find
the floor with consistency posting 18 kills for the second-straight set. This
time the Mocs would come up with a 25-23 victory. The consistency of the
Bulldogs' offense was too much for Chattanooga as it took the match with a
25-22 win.
Chattanooga begins the Hokie Invitational on Friday against Connecticut
at 4 p.m. in Blacksbug, Va. The Mocs take on host Virginia Tech on Saturday at
11 a.m. before coming home to host Mercer on Sept. 28 at Maclellan Gym.
