Moctoberfest is a month-long celebration of Chattanooga Mocs
men's basketball. It includes historical moments, social media interactions and
introduction to UTC's freshmen among the myriad of video tributes and stories.
Day 12 introduces freshman guard Gee McGhee (Baton Rouge,
La.). At first glance, McGhee is not what he appears. He is listed as a
freshman on the roster, but he certainly comes off as an older student-athlete
in a number of ways.
"Gee McGhee, that's one tough guy," said head coach John
Shulman. "This summer he became our vocal leader. You don't expect a freshman
to be a vocal leader, but he was. He's a unique blend. He's got a big smile off
the court, but he'll kill you on it.
"That kind of competitiveness...that's what you want."
Having the vocal swagger of a veteran is backed by the body
of one as well. When watching film, you have to be reminded he is just a
first-year performer.
"Gee is 6-5, 205 pounds," Shulman added. "He is a man on the
wing. Gee has combo guard skills. He can handle it, he can shoot it and he can
defend it. We are very excited about what Gee brings to the court."
McGhee chose Chattanooga over Murray State and Arkansas
State. He led Redemptorist High School in Baton Rouge to 99 wins during his
prep career playing for Tim Waller, Jr.
He averaged in double-digits all four seasons including 29.2
points per contest as a senior. He posted 26.2 points per game as a junior. He
ranked No. 11 in the state by Scout.com, No. 3 shooting guard, heading into the
fall of 2011.
The son of Cheryl and Ronnie McGhee, Gee played AAU ball for
his dad and the Bayou Flames. He also teamed up with fellow Mocs freshman Casey
Jones on the Louisiana Dynasty.
Chattanooga opens the season Monday, November 12, against
