Mocs Drop Five-Set Match to ETSU Saturday

| By:

JOHSON CITY, Tenn. – The Chattanooga Mocs fell 3-2 Saturday night at ETSU despite a grueling effort against the Bucs in the team's first visit to Johnson City, Tenn., since East Tennessee rejoined the Southern Conference.

Junior Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) led the offensive charge with 12 kills and 22 digs, her second double-double of the weekend, and sophomore Kristy Wieser (Lincoln, Neb.) followed up the performance with 10 kills and a .348 hitting percentage.

On defense, UTC's Melissa Green (Boca Raton, Fla.) totaled a team-high 23 digs and follow Boca Raton native Lauren Gainer (Boca Raton, Fla.) led defenders with seven blocks – six assisted.

ETSU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, coming out hot with a close 25-21 win in the first set and a blow-out 25-15 win in the second, but UTC rallied back in the third to take a convincing 25-18 victory after the break.

After hitting below .200 in the first two frames, the Mocs rallied back to hit an even .200 in the third.  UTC tallied 11 kills, including a block and three service aces, to best the Bucs after the intermission.  Junior Sarah Batterton (Colbert, Wash.) totaled four kills in the win.

UTC struck again in the fourth set to hit a match-best .207 to even the match at 2-2.  Nine kills and two total blocks in the stanza sent the contest to a deciding fifth set.  Reid posted three of her 12 kills in the set while coming up with six digs, as she did in the third as well.

However, despite the quick resurgence, Chattanooga was eventually downed 16-14 in extra points of the deciding set.  Tying the set 14-14 on a Reid kill, an ETSU and a UTC attacking error led to the Mocs' downfall.

The Mocs have just one match on schedule for next week, traveling to Greensboro, N.C., Saturday to take on the UNCG Spartans.  The match is set for 5 p.m.  UTC returns to Maclellan Gym the following week to two matches, including senior day.
