GREENVILLE, S.C. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior
Teghan Henderson (Pickering, Ontario) finished second in the women's race at the Southern Conference Championships, leading the Mocs to a second place finish while the men, led by junior
Paul Stuart (Brentwood, Tenn.), placed seventh. Head Coach
Bill Gautier tied for Women's Coach of the Year.
Â
Henderson covered the 5K course in a time of 17:45.27, behind SoCon Runner of the Year Furman's Allie Buchalski. Sophomore
Emily Drouin (Verona, Ontario) was second across the line for the Mocs in seventh with a time of 18:34.62 earning all-conference first team honors along with Henderson.
Â
"Our conference is very strong up front," Gautier said. "Teghan is a proven All-American, but it has taken time for her to get back. She had to start over and she has proven that she can get back. The leader had the home crowd behind her cheering, but Teghan never gave up.
Â
"Emily missed two weeks of running but her mind didn't miss. She spent two weeks recouping from her injury and is much improved from last year."
Â
Sophomores
Anna Kate Chance (Columbia, Tenn.) and
Hannah Chamblin (Memphis, Tenn.) earned all-conference second team honors. Chance was 12
th overall with a time of 19:06.33 with Chamblin two spots behind at 14
th in a time of 19:07.51. Junior
Jessica York (Afton, Tenn.) was the fifth Chattanooga runner across the line, placing 17
th with a time of 19:18.54.
Â
"People don't think of Anna Kate and Hannah as cross country runners, but they made the difference when it counted. They came through like gangbusters. It was huge," Gautier said.
Â
Senior
Rebecca Greenwall (Bogart, Ga.) placed 32
nd in her final SoCon championships with a time of 20:09.26.
Â
"Rebecca tried hard early on and wanted it more than anyone," Gautier said. "She has been the team leader and kept them together. We wouldn't be her without her and she's been a tremendous leader."
Â
Junior
Paul Stuart (Brentwood, Tenn.) finished 11
th and earned All-Conference second team honors with a season-high time of 24:58.06 over the 8-kilometer course to lead the Mocs. Â
Â
"I'm very proud of Paul," Gautier said. "He's been the leader on the team this year and that's a lot of pressure with so many freshmen. He rose to the occasion and he means a lot to the program.
Â
"I thought he'd have a shot at all-conference if he ran well today and he did."
Â
Samford's Arse'ne Guillorel took first ahead Furman who placed eight in the Top 10 that also included VMI's Avery Martin in ninth.
Â
Freshman
Richard Guiry (Nashville, Tenn.) was the second UTC runner to finish, placing 28
th and earning all-freshman honors. He covered the 8K course in a PR time of 25:56.11. Rookie
John Payne (Portland, Tenn.), running in his second race of the year, placed third for UTC in his first 8-kilometer race, with a time of 26:12.89. Freshman
Mark Britt placed 44
th with a time of 26:29.43 while senior
Austin Ethridge (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) finished with a time of 27:01.96 and freshman
Jack Strevell (Nolensville, Tenn.) clocked a time of 27:25.12, all personal records.
Â
"That was a strong race for Guiry," Gautier said. "
John Payne also had a good race after missing most of the year. There is a lot of room for improvement and we'll be better and more mature next year. I'm happy for them and how they performed today."
Â
Gautier was selected the co-Coach of the Year for the women along with Furman's head coach Robert Gary.
Â
"I appreciate the conference coaches recognizing me and a very good team effort," Gautier said. "Our women were as dominating finishing second as Furman was finishing first. I really appreciate that they recognize what we've done this year."
Â
Up next for the Mocs is the NCAA South Region Championship in Tuscaloosa, Ala., in two weeks.
