Mocs Close Out Regular Season with Road Trip

UTC sits at the top of the Southern Conference at 11-3 and 22-5 overall.

The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team wraps up the 2015-16 regular season facing ETSU Friday at 2:00 p.m., in Johnson City, Tenn., and Western Carolina Saturday at 6:00 p.m., in Cullowhee, N.C. UTC sits at the top of the Southern Conference at 11-3 and 22-5 overall.

"Our team is seeing the results of all their hard work, not just this season, but for the seniors in particular and the returners from last year," head coach Travis Filar stated. "They've worked hard to get to this point and to gain the confidence they have. The wins this weekend confirms that all our hard work has put us in a really good position."

Chattanooga hasn't reached more than 20 wins in a season since 1999. The Mocs are coming off 3-1 wins against The Citadel on Senior Night and Furman in UTC's last home match of the year, winning 12 matches in a row at Maclellan Gym. The squad can clinch at least a share of the league title with a win in either of the final two matches and wins it outright with a sweep.

"We've put ourselves in a good spot for conference standings," stated Filar. "It's about how we practice and us playing our game that will keep us there."

Junior Kristy Wieser (Lincoln, Neb.) boasts a team-best .380 hitting percentage, which ranks her 43rd nationally. She has hit double-digit kills in the last six matches and marked a .400 attack percentage or better in 14 matches this season. Additionally, she is second on the squad with 60 total blocks.

Senior Lauren Gainer (Boca Raton, Fla.) paces the team with 70 blocks, posting five or more five times this year. She has amassed 328 career blocks, which is sixth on Chattanooga's all-time career list.

"What I like when you're on the road is it's you and no one else," Filar explained. "You have to rely on each other, and our team is so strong and such a close group that they do really well in those moments."

UTC beat ETSU 3-1 on Oct. 16 at home. The Bucs are 18-9 and fourth in league play at 9-5. ETSU is coming off a 3-1 win at Wofford Wednesday and a sweep over UNCG Saturday, ending the Spartans 10-match winning streak.

The Bucs took both SoCon weekly honors for Nov. 3-9, with senior middle blocker Khadijah Wiley earning the offensive award, making 25 kills and a .404 hitting percentage in the Bucs last two matches. Freshman defensive specialist Hailey Aguilar was given the defensive honor after recording 45 digs, averaging 6.43 per set.

The Mocs swept Western Carolina on Sept. 26 at home. The Catamounts are 11-19 and seventh in the conference with a 5-9 record. Western Carolina won its lone match last weekend 3-2 over Mercer.

Sophomore setter Jo-Leigh Vervelde posted her ninth triple-double against Mercer with 11 kills, 24 assists and 15 digs. Senior libero Elyssa Mulheron leads the squad with 458 digs, averaging 4.63 per set.

Chattanooga returns to Cullowhee, N.C., the following weekend for the Southern Conference Tournament starting Nov. 21.

"Saturday's match will be a great opportunity for our players to be in the gym where the following weekend the conference tournament is at," Filar said. "There's a full advantage to that. We're going to get as many reps as possible in that gym before the match and tournament."
