Mocs Travel to Samford Wednesday

This is the first time since 2003 the UTC volleyball program has hit 20 wins in a season.

The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team travels to Birmingham, Ala., Wednesday to face Samford at 7:00 p.m., Eastern time. UTC is 20-4, marking the first time since 2003 the program has hit 20 wins in a season, and 9-2 in Southern Conference play, a half-match behind Furman for first.

"I've been a part of a couple teams as an assistant coach that had 20 wins," head coach Travis Filar stated. "This is my first one as a head coach so it's special. It's not special just because we've reached 20 wins, but because of the people we're doing it with. We have a great group of student-athletes and coaching staff and awesome support."

Chattanooga is coming off 3-1 wins over Wofford at home and Mercer in Macon, Ga. The squad is on an 11-match winning streak at home and won 16 of its last 18 overall.

"This group has learned how to win, and I've said that before this year," Filar said. "When it gets tight and we have to score that point, we find ways to win."

Senior Catherine Chason (Alpharetta, Ga.) was named SoCon Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. She posted 17 digs at Mercer and 26 against Wofford. Chason boasts a 50th national ranking in digs per set (4.82).

Two Mocs are coming off double-double performances against Wofford. Senior Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) tallied 12 kills and 17 digs. Sophomore Lauren Greenspoon (Houston, Texas) racked up 51 assists and 10 digs. She also is ranked 12th in the nation for assists per set at 11.46.

UTC posted a 3-0 win over the Bulldogs on Oct. 17 in Maclellan Gym.

Samford is 9-11 and 4-6 in league play. It beat Wofford 3-1 at home and was swept by UNCG in Greensboro, N.C., last week. Senior middle blocker Emily Meitz is 45th nationally with her .376 hitting percentage. Freshman outside hitter Krista Boesing paces the Bulldogs with 199 kills, averaging 2.80 per set. She earned SoCon Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 12.
