Mocs Travel to Virginia Tech for Last Regular Season Tournament

The Mocs have recorded six three-set wins this season and are off to their best start since 1987 with an 8-2 record.

The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team travels to the Hokie Invitational, hosted by Virginia Tech, in Blacksburg, Va., Friday and Saturday for the last regular season tournament of 2015. Liberty and Middle Tennessee are also competing in the event.

UTC starts the weekend against the Liberty Flames Friday at 4:30 p.m. The Mocs take the court at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, against the hosts, followed by Blue Raiders at 5:00 p.m.

"We're going to see three very talented, very good, well-coached teams," head coach Travis Filar stated. "I love that we'll be going into the tournament confident."

Chattanooga is on a four-match winning streak after beating Kennesaw State 3-0 on Tuesday and sweeping three wins in last weekend's home tourney title.

"One of the challenges for the team against Kennesaw State was bringing the momentum from last weekend into that match, and now they have to do that this weekend," Filar said.

The squad has recorded six three-set wins this season and are off to their best start since 1987 with an 8-2 record.

Catherine Chason (Alpharetta, Ga.) earned MVP at the Scenic City Showdown - Presented by Hampton Inn & Suites (Downtown Chattanooga). Lauren Greenspoon (Houston, Texas) and Sarah Batterton (Colbert, Wash.) were featured on the all-tournament team.

Chason leads the team in digs with 154 and is tied for the most aces on the squad with 11. Greenspoon is ranked No. 30 nationally for assists per set (11.14) with a total of 390 assists. Batterton paces the team in kills with 105, while Kristy Wieser (Lincoln, Neb.) has tallied the most total blocks with 24.

Friday is the first meeting for Chattanooga and Liberty on the volleyball court. The Flames are coming off an 0-3 showing at the Appalachian State Invitational losing to Charlotte (3-0), Appalachian State (3-2) and Missouri (3-1), making their record 4-5. The spotlight is on freshman libero Margaret Latchford after earning a season-high digs with 29 against Appalachian State. This season she has recorded 129 digs and averages 4.16 digs per set.

UTC's last meeting with Virginia Tech was in 2011. The Mocs dropped the match 3-1 to the Atlantic Coast Conference opponent. The Hokies have a 7-2 record after going 1-2 in the Indiana Invitational losing to Indiana (3-0) and Northern Arizona (3-2) while topping Bowling Green (3-1). Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Ashley Battle earned all-tournament at the Indiana Invitational. She leads the team in hitting percentage with a .385 and total blocks (34).

The Mocs haven't faced Middle Tennessee since 2004 when the Blue Raiders claimed a 3-1 win. The two teams have played each other 29 times, with UTC claiming 10 wins. Middle Tennessee is 2-10 including two 3-0 losses at its home tournament last weekend against VCU and Kansas State. UTC and the Blue Raiders have one common opponent, UAB. The Mocs beat UAB 3-1 on Sept. 11, and Middle Tennessee clinched a 3-0 win over UAB Wednesday evening. Senior outside hitter Chelsea Ross leads the way with 187 kills, while senior middle blocker Rachel Shaughnessy paces the squad in total blocks recording 31.
