Mocs Advance with a 4-0 Win Over UNCG

UTC won its quarterfinal match over the Spartans at the SoCon Championships.

Box Score The No. 3 seeded University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team defeated UNC Greensboro Friday afternoon with a 4-0 shutout in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Conference Championships.

"It's nice to get through the first match, and there's always a lot of excitement and nervous energy to get out," head coach Jeff Clark said. "We got it out and our team did a good job dealing with the delays starting the match. It was a long day and I thought we came out with the right focus, and it was a good match for us."

The Mocs jumped out quickly, taking the doubles point with a 6-4 win by Kayla Jones and Kelsey Coots over the Spartans' Soumeya Anane and Amy Ellis at No. 1.  Sophomore Samantha Caswell and senior Katie Polk earned a 6-4 victory over UNCG's Sarah Swiderski and Blaine Boaz at No. 2.

Despite a 30-minute lightning delay during the doubles play, the Mocs were able to keep their momentum heading into the singles, where they earned three more points to clinch the match.

In the singles, Polk gave the Mocs their second point of the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win over UNCG's Blaine Boaz at No. 5.

Following Polk's win, Jones defeated the Spartans' Anane 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1, followed by Alison Storie's 6-3, 6-4 win to clinch the match at No. 4.

"Katie has been playing great, and it was nice to see three of our seniors get the wins in singles today," Clark said. "We got five out of six first sets and we were very close in the other ones. It was a very good match for us heading into the semifinals."

The Mocs return to action Saturday at the Champions Club, where they will take on the No. 2 seeded East Tennessee State in the semifinal round of the SoCon Tournament. The Bucs are coming off a 4-0 win on Friday against No. 7 Mercer. Competition is set to take place at 2 p.m. (E.S.T.).
