Men’s Golf Opens Season Sunday in New York

Tennessee Amateur Champion Wes Gosselin and the Chattanooga Mocs begin their season Sunday at the Turning Stone-Tiger Intercollegiate.

CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team opens the 2016-17 season Sunday at the Turning Stone-Tiger Intercollegiate in Verona, N.Y. The two-day, 54-hole tournament is played at the Turning Stone Resort, which hosted the PGA Professional National Championship in June.
Coach Mark Guhne is excited to begin play.
"We're definitely ready," Guhne noted. "I know I am. The guys worked extremely hard to get here. Qualifying was very competitive. It's a very deep roster, so making the travel roster is hard.
"Hopefully that carries over into tournament play."
Senior Wes Gosselin, the 2016 Tennessee Amateur Champion, won qualifying at -13. Andrew Weathers (-5), Brooks Thomas (-4) and Lake Johnson (E) also posted par or better scores.
The top three in qualifying earned travel spots with two picks reserved at coach's discretion. He decided to go with the top 5 over the 72-hole qualifying.
"I gave myself a safety net," Guhne chuckled. "But I didn't need it. My plan was to go with the top 5 all the time, but you want to let it play out. We have an individual spot for each of the first two events so we'll end up seeing seven guys get some early experience."
Junior College All-American Phillip Hickam claimed the coveted fifth spot. He had a two-shot advantage going into the final day with a 2-over par 73 earning his ticket at Chattanooga Golf & Country Club. Etienne Brault and Will Porter tied for sixth after Porter blistered the course with a 66 (-5).
"The plan is for Etienne to play in New York, and Will at the Farm (Carpet Capital)," Guhne added. "'E' is from Quebec which is pretty close for his family to come watch him play.
"We'll see how things shake out in New York. The only guaranteed spot is Will's individual slot at the Carpet Capital."
The four-day, 72-hole qualifying event covered four courses – Council Fire, Farm, Black Creek and Chattanooga Golf & Country Club. According to Guhne, the quality of the area courses makes a huge difference in preparation.
"We're very fortunate to have such great venues in our area," he concluded. "We get fantastic support from all of the area courses. They get us ready to get on the road which starts this weekend."
