Mocs Defeat the Owls 6-1

UTC improves to 3-1 in spring action.

Box Score The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team scored a 6-1 win over Kennesaw State in Chattanooga tonight.  The Mocs won the doubles point and five of six singles to improve to 3-1 in the spring.

"It was a great match," stated head coach Chad Camper.  "I thought we got down a little early and they played well.  We are a young team and to be able to make some of the decisions we are making on the court, I couldn't be more proud."

There was a little adversity when travel difficulties for Kennesaw State pushed the start of the match back to 6:50 p.m.  However, the Mocs were unfazed by the delay, making quick work of the doubles point.

Sophomores Delaney Edwards and Sydney Patton scored a 6-2 win to even their record at 2-2 at No. 2.  Sophomores Mckenzie Barco and Caroline Hall improved to 3-1 at No. 3 with the same score in their match.  Senior Rachele Gazzola and junior Samantha Caswell were up 5-3 at No. 1 when the point was clinched.

Caswell kept the momentum going with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Laura Hopton at No. 1.  Hall made it 2-0 with her 6-0, 6-3 win over Kennedy Craig at No. 3.

The Mocs were leading in three of the last four matches when Patton clinched at No. 4.  She defeated Alexandra Mercado (6-2, 6-4) to give UTC the win.

With the match in hand, Gazzola retired in her match at No. 5 and Barco pulled out a 6-4, 6-2 win over Jessica Cantrell at No. 6.

That left Edwards, who won the first set 6-4, in a battle with Cristina Perez.  Perez battle back to win the tiebreaker, forcing a 10-point superbreaker to decide the match.  Edwards fought off a match point at 9-8 to win the final frame 11-9.

"It was a huge win for Delaney Edwards," added Camper.  "She didn't always play her best tennis, but she is young and didn't play a lot last year.  This is probably the biggest win of her career."

Next up for the Mocs is a neutral match on Sunday against Memphis in Murfreesboro, Tenn.  This is a late addition to the schedule, with first serve set for 11:00 a.m. (E.S.T.).  The next home match is Feb. 10 against Brenau at 6:00 p.m. at the Strang-Voges Tennis Center at McCallie.
