Mocs Score 4-3 Win Over UNCG

UTC opens SoCon action with a tight win over the Spartans today.

Box Score The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team scored a big 4-3 win over UNCG to open Southern Conference action today.  The Mocs won the doubles point and three singles matches at the Baylor School courts in Chattanooga to improve to 10-3 overall.

"It was a good win," stated UTC head coach Chad Camper.  "Greensboro has a great program.  They are very experienced and Coach Ale does an outstanding job.  They play a quality brand of tennis.

"I knew going in it was going to be a battle, despite their record.  I think winning the doubles the way we did at third set a lot of momentum going forward."

Senior Rachele Gazzola and junior Samantha Caswell won their third in a row at No. 1, while sophomores Mckenzie Barco and Caroline Hall clinched the point with a 6-2 win at No. 3.

Hall put UTC up 2-0 with a straight-sets win at No. 4 singles.  It was her fourth win in a row as she improved to 10-2 in the spring.

UNCG got on the board with a win at No. 3, but sophomore Delaney Edwards responded with a win at No. 2.  The Spartans took the No. 5 match to close the team gap to 3-2 in favor of the Mocs.

After taking the first set in a tiebreaker at No. 1, Caswell clinched the team win with a 6-1 victory in the second.

"Delaney Edwards getting that first set and Caroline winning quickly to get us up 2-0 in the match score was big," added Camper.  "Hats off to Delaney and Samantha for being able to close out the match in two sets.  Also Mckenzie Barco staying alive at No. 6 six all had a lot to do with it.

"I think we learned a lot today, which is surprising in a conference match.  Hopefully, going forward it makes us a better program.  Not just on the court, but as a team."

The Mocs play their next five matches on the road, beginning Friday, March 11 at UAB.  Chattanooga's next home match is March 31 against Western Kentucky.
