The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team opens the 2017 Southern Conference Tournament on Friday, April 21. The Mocs take on Samford at 10:30 a.m. (E.D.T.) in the first round in Greenville, S.C.
Under first year head coach
Chad Camper, Chattanooga finished tied for third with a 4-3 SoCon mark and a 14-7 overall record. After tiebreakers, UTC garnered the No. 5 seed in the tournament.
"We knew that no matter who we face in the first round, it would be a tough one," stated Camper. "The team is excited about the three way tie for third, and ending up the No. 5 seed isn't upsetting.
"We are focused on coming out excited and competing hard. For most of the team, this is the first time playing in the conference tournament so there is a lot of anticipation."
The Mocs dropped a 5-2 decision to Samford in the regular season finale last weekend. UTC lost two tough three-setters in the last two points of that meeting.
Chattanooga is 17-16 in the all-time series against Samford, however the Bulldogs have won four of the last five.
UTC has advanced to the SoCon Tournament Semifinals for three years in a row, but has not made the finals since 2000. The Mocs last won the SoCon in 1990. UTC also won the league in 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1988.
