CHATTANOOGA --- After hosting the Chattanooga Classic over the weekend, the Mocs volleyball team is set to travel west on I-24 to Murfreesboro, Tenn., for a midweek clash against Middle Tennessee at 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday evening.
Â
Chattanooga is currently 4-3 on the season after posting a 2-1 weekend at home during the Classic, falling in the final match to Murray State. MTSU will enter Tuesday's contest with an 0-7 mark in 2017. The Blue Raiders lead the overall series 15-11, however, the Mocs captured a 3-1 victory in their last meeting on September 19, 2015.
Â
"I think the way the Murray State match ended, left a real hunger in our team to get after it and compete again to right the wrongs that we saw come up on Saturday night," said head coach
Travis Filar.
Â
"So, I am excited we don't have to wait long before we play our next match. We had an awesome practice on Monday and got back to focusing on the little things that we have to be great at to win."
Â
Junior
Emily Plumlee and sophomore
Dani Szczepanski were named to the Chattanooga Classic all-tournament team over the weekend after combining for 43 kills on a .380 hitting percentage while adding 17.0 blocks. The duo leads the Southern Conference in blocks with each of them totaling 24.0 so far on the season.
Â
The Mocs lead the SoCon in multiple defensive categories as a team, racking up 51.0 total blocks on a 2.24 blocks per set average while including a conference-best 19.65 digs per set, over 2.0 digs per set more than the next conference member. Freshman
Megan Kaufman leads the SoCon with 6.61 digs per set which ranks fifth in NCAA DI and first among all freshmen.
Â
On the offensive side, senior
Lauren Greenspoon ranks first in the conference with a 10.91 assists per set average after posting 106 assists over the weekend in just ten sets. Redshirt sophomore
Ally Ford sits fourth in kills per set with a 4.17 average while junior
Miranda Elpers is eighth with 3.33 kills per set.
Â
"I know we will respond well in Murfreesboro against a very hungry and competitive in-state opponent, who will be fired up to compete for the first time in their own gym," added Filar.
Â
"We look forward to the opportunity to continue to get better in preparation for our conference season."
