The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team looks to get back on the winning track at Finley Stadium this weekend with a huge Southern Conference showdown against No. 13 Furman.  Game time is set for 2:04 p.m. (E.D.T.) on Saturday, Nov. 2, in Chattanooga.

UTC enters the game in third-place in the SoCon race with a 3-1 league record, 4-4 overall.  The Mocs dropped a heartbreaker in overtime to Wofford (35-34) last week.  Furman is 5-3 overall and tied for first in the league with Wofford at 4-1, a half-game ahead of the Mocs.

UTC has won three of its last four overall and is 3-1 at Finley Stadium this season.  Furman is the second ranked team to visit the Scenic City this season, joining No. 1 James Madison which beat the Mocs 37-14 on Sept. 21.

The Paladins have won four of their last five to climb to No. 13 in both the FCS Coaches Poll and the STATS FCS Top 25.  UTC is receiving one vote in the FCS Coaches Poll.

IT'S ALL IN THE NAME
On first reference, it is acceptable to refer to us as the "University of Tennessee at Chattanooga." After that, we prefer to be called "Chattanooga" or "UTC."  Our nickname is "Mocs," not Moccasins.  Chattanooga is pronounced chat-uh-NEW-guh, commonly mistaken as CHATT-nooga.

SEASON NO. 112
As a part of the year-long celebration of 150 years of college football, the Mocs are competing in their 112th season.  The University of Chattanooga was founded in 1886 and football officially began play in 1904.  No teams were fielded in 1917 and 1918 due to World War I.  There was also a two-year hiatus from football action during World War II in 1943 and 1944.  The Mocs have an all-time record of 543-536-35 (.503) and have won 13 conference titles.

FORD ON THE NATIONAL RADAR
Freshman RB Ailym Ford has been recognized among the top freshmen in the country five times this season.  Four times he has been on the Honorable Mention list for the STATS FCS National Freshman of the Week, including his 136-yard and two TDs on 29 carries performance at Wofford last week.  He was the pick for STATS FCS National Freshman of the Week after posting 200 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries in a 16-13 win over ETSU on Oct. 17.

30 CARRIES THREE STRAIGHT GAMES ... ALMOST FOUR.
Freshman RB Ailym Ford carried the ball 30+ times in each three consecutive games against Western Carolina, Mercer and ETSU.  The only other Moc to handle that much of the rushing load in three straight games was Tyrone Coleman in 1998.  He almost made it four in a row with 29 carries for 136 yards and two TDs at Wofford.  He had 31 carries for 200 yards and two scores against ETSU, 32 carries for 116 yards and a score at Mercer and 195 yards and two scores on 30 attempts against Western Carolina.  Coleman's run included 31 carries for 210 yards at The Citadel on 11/7/98, a school-record 37 carries for 142 yards against ETSU on 11/14/98 and 31 carries for 150 yards and three TDs at Furman on 11/21/98.

200 CARRIES AND 1,000 YARDS
Ailym Ford is 17 carries away from being the ninth in school history to post 200 rushing attempts in a season.  The last to do it was Jacob Huesman and Derrick Craine in 2015.  Huesman had 220 that season, while Craine had a school-record 230.  He is also 107 yards away from becoming the 13th Moc to rush for 1,000 yards in a season.  Craine was the last to do it in 2016.

FORD LEADS FCS FRESHMEN IN RUSHING YARDS PER GAME
True freshman Ailym Ford is averaging 111.6 yards per game this season, tops among all freshmen at the FCS level.  He is second in the SoCon and No. 9 overall in the FCS in rushing.

FORD MOVES UP UTC FRESHMAN RUSHING RECORD LIST
Ford is fifth in freshman rushing yards at UTC with 893 this season.  He needs 12 to pass Jacob Huesman (2012) for fourth.  He holds the school freshman record with nine rushing TDs.  His 182 rushing attempts is third in freshman history at UTC.  He needs 14 more to pass Huesman (2012). He has five 100-yard rusing games, tying with James Roberts (1989) and Gwain Durden (1977) for second among freshman at Chattanooga and one shy of the freshman record held by Mike Smith (1977).  The overall school record for 100-yard games in a season is seven by Eldra Buckley (2006) and Tyrone Coleman (1998).

SEVEN SACKS ALLOWED IN EIGHT GAMES
Not only is UTC running the ball effectively, but the Mocs offensive line is also doing an outstanding job of protecting QB Nick Tiano.  Despite allowing five sacks in the last two games, the Mocs have only given up seven all year, ranking second in the SoCon and seventh in the FCS in sacks allowed.

This continues a streak of improvement up front.  UTC's offensive line gave up 17 sacks in 2018, which was third in the SoCon and 33rd in the FCS.  That was much better from 2017 when they were last in the SoCon and 109th in the FCS, allowing over three per game.

MOCS IMPROVING ON THIRD DOWN
Over the past few weeks, the Mocs have been steadily climbing the rankings in third down performance.  After going 7/12 at Wofford, UTC is now 50/116 (43.1%) for the year.  That is fourth in the SoCon and No. 25 in the FCS.  Chattanooga is 14/27 (51.9%) the last two games.

MOCS IN THE TOP 25 FOR FEWEST PENALTIES
After only being flagged a season-low two times for 20 yards at Wofford, the Mocs are among the FCS leaders for fewest penalties per game.  UTC is averaging 5.1 per outing, fourth in the SoCon and No. 22 in the FCS.

BREWER LEADS SOCON IN PUNTING
Senior Colin Brewer is having an outstanding season punting for the Mocs.  He is currently leading the SoCon with a 44.1 average on 23 attempts.  That number would be No. 8 in the FCS if he had the 3.6/game to qualify for the rankings.  It is also the fourth best single-season average at UTC.  He has hit a season-long 56-yarder in each of the last two games.  He has 170 career punts, which is fifth all-time at UTC.

HENDERSON LEADS THE SOCON IN YARDS PER CATCH
Junior WR Reginald Henderson had a season-high 86 receiving yards on three catches at Wofford.  He also had a season-long 37-yard haul in the fourth quarter.  He is currently second on the team with 15 catches for 310 yards.  His 20.7 yards per catch leads the SoCon and is No. 20 in the FCS.

NUNNELLY ON THE WALTER PAYTON AWARD WATCH LIST
Junior receiver Bryce Nunnelly is on the 2019 Walter Payton Award Preseason Watch List. He is also on the preseason All-SoCon first team and a consensus preseason All-American.  He is currently sixth in the SoCon with 4.2 receptions per game and third with 59.6 receiving yards per game.  Injuries limited his time on the field against Mercer and ETSU, but he still leads the team with 34 catches for 477 yards and four TDs, including 100-yard games against Eastern Illinois and Western Carolina.  He has 5+ catches in 14 of the last 19 games and has caught a pass in 21-straight games.  Over the last two years, he has 14 catches of 40+ yards.

NUNNELLY MOVING INTO THE CAREER CHARTS AT UTC
• Eight career 100-yard receiving games is third all-time at UTC ... two shy of the school record set by Joe Burks (1977-80) ... Cos Dematteo (1999-02) is second with nine 100-yard games ... all in the last 17 games.
• 1,803 career yards with 11 TDs and 120 catches
• Needs six catches to break into the top 10 all-time at UTC
• 10th in career receiving yards ... needs 19 to pass Larry Stokes (1973-76) for ninth
• Needs two receiving TDs to break into the top 10 all-time at UTC.

TIANO-NUNNELLY CONNECTION AMONG TOPS IN SCHOOL HISTORY
Senior QB Nick Tiano and junior WR Bryce Nunnelly have hooked up for 13 touchdowns over the last two years. It would be 14 if the trick play against South Carolina in 2018 was included where Nunnelly threw a two-yard TD pass to Tiano. Regardless of how it is scored, this is one of the top throw-and-catch tandems in school history.  Six of their 13 touchdown strikes have been for 50+ yards.  Below is where they rank all-time at UTC in touchdowns between a QB and receiver.
1. 22 – Chris Sanders (QB) to Cos DeMatteo (WR) – 1999-00
2. 15 - Jacob Huesman (QB) to Faysal Shafaat (TE) - 2012-14
3. 13 – Nick Tiano (QB) to Bryce Nunnelly (WR) – 2018-19
13 - Steve Woods (QB) to Joe Burke (WR) - 1979-80

TIANO CLIMBING UTC'S RECORD BOOKS
With 23 games at UTC under his belt, senior QB Nick Tiano is climbing the following lists in UTC's record book:
• 11-12 as a starter ... tied for ninth in all-time wins at UTC with Mickey Brokas (1970-73) ... needs three more wins to tie B.J. Coleman (2009-11) for eighth.
• 428-739 (.579) career passing.
• 4,967 career passing yards is eighth all-time at UTC ... needs 60 to pass Steve Woods (1978-81) for seventh.

• Sixth in career completions ... needs 12 to pass Mickey Brokas (1970-73) for fifth.

• 28 career TD passes is tied for eighth all-time at UTC with Tony Merendino (1975-78) and Brian Hampton (1995-98) ... needs two more to pass Alejandro Bennifield (2014-17) for seventh.
• 11 200-yard passing games is seventh all-time at UTC ... needs two more to pass Kenyon Earl for sixth.
• 5,519 yards of total offense is seventh all-time at UTC ... needs 481 yards to pass Brian Hampton (1995-98) for sixth.

BOECK NAMED SOCON DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sophomore LB Ty Boeck was the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week after the 34-17 win at Mercer on Oct. 5.  Boeck collected a team-high 12 tackles. It was his third straight week with double-digit stops. Two of those tackles were for loss while he forced two fumbles recovering one.

DOWDELL BACK RETURNING PUNTS
Junior DB Brandon Dowdell was No. 6 in the FCS with a 12.6 punt return average on 13 attempts as a freshman in 2017, but only had three attempts for nine yards in 2018.  He did not return any punts on 2018, but returned to the job at Jacksonville State.  He quickly made an impact with returns of 18 and 38 yards.  The second was a career-long and set up the Mocs' second field goal.  He also had a return of 27 yards at Tennessee negated by a penalty.

So far this season, Dowdell is averaging 9.5 yards on six returns. That would be 25th in the FCS if he had enough to qualify for the ranking.  His 10.5 career average (22 attempts) is the third-highest mark in school history.

ULMO ON MITCHELL AWARD WATCH LIST
Junior kicker Victor Ulmo is on the Fred Mitchell Award Watch List for the second year in a row.  The Mitchell Award recognizes place-kickers for their excellence on the football field and for continued community service during their off-season. The Mitchell Award goes to the top place-kicker among FCS, NCAA Division II, Division II, NAIA and NJCAA programs.  Ulmo is currently 30-44 (68.2%) for his career.  He is 8-13 on field goals this season with a long of 38 yards.  For his career, Ulmo is 28-34 (82.4%) from inside 40 yards.

COOPER NAMED SOCON DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Senior LB Marshall Cooper was a second team All-SoCon pick last season and is on the preseason first team heading into 2019. He was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week, presented by GEICO, after posting 10 tackles to lead the Mocs to a 24-10 season-opening win over Eastern Illinois on Aug. 29.  It was the third career weekly honor from the SoCon for Cooper, a native of Hixson, Tenn.  He was Defensive Player of the Week after last year's win over Samford and Special Teams Player of the Week after blocking a punt in a win over ETSU in 2017. Seven of his 10 tackles against the Panthers were solo stops.  He also broke up two passes in the win.  The Mocs' defense only allowed 10 points in the Thursday night home opener, the fewest given up by a SoCon team in Week 1.
