MORE ON THE SOCON RACE
No. 7/9 Furman (7-3, 6-1 SoCon) and No. 20/21 Wofford (6-3, 6-1) both control their own destiny in the race for the SoCon title. If Furman wins at Wofford on Saturday, they take the league outright. The Terriers need to win their last two games, against Furman and at The Citadel, to claim the title to themselves. The Citadel needs to win on Saturday at UTC, have Wofford beat Furman, then beat Wofford for a shot. The Mocs need beat The Citadel, Wofford win against Furman then lose at The Citadel. The worst UTC could finish is tied for fourth in the league standings, which is where they were picked by the SoCon coaches in the preseason and one spot better than the media polls. Samford (4-6, 3-4), Mercer (4-6, 3-4) and VMI (4-6, 3-4) are all tied for fifth. Western Carolina (3-7, 2-5) is eighth, followed by ETSU (2-8, 0-7) who still looking for its SoCon victory.

IT'S ALL IN THE NAME
On first reference, it is acceptable to refer to us as the "University of Tennessee at Chattanooga." After that, we prefer to be called "Chattanooga" or "UTC." Our nickname is "Mocs," not Moccasins. Chattanooga is pronounced
chat-uh-NEW-guh, commonly mistaken as CHATT-nooga.
SEASON NO. 112

NOTES TO KNOW ABOUT THE CITADEL SERIES
• This is the 53rd meeting in the series.
• The Mocs have faced The Citadel more than any other opponent.
• UTC holds a 31-19-2 advantage in the rivalry that dates back to 1926.
• The Mocs have won seven of 10 in the series.
• The Citadel has won two of the last three meetings.
• Chattanooga is 18-7-1 at home against The Citadel ... 6-5 at Finley Stadium.
CITADEL-UTC RIVALRY IS A HOT ONE
This is one of the more heated rivalries in the league over the last few meetings. UTC has won seven of 10 since 2009, but seven of the last eight encounters have been battles.
Last year, the Mocs led 21-7 in the second quarter before The Citadel tied it at 21-21 and forced overtime. UTC won on a trick play, two-point conversion pass from
Bryce Nunnelly to
Jordan Giberti.
in 2017, UTC carried a 14-7 lead into the locker room, only to see that fade into a 21-14 loss. The Mocs gave up three INTs and 405 yards of rushing offense.
The 2016 meeting in Charleston saw the Mocs only give up two touchdowns in a 22-14 loss to the eighth-ranked Bulldogs. UTC was held to just 295 yards of total offense (240 pass, 55 rush) on just 47 plays in that outing. Chattanooga allowed a season-high 342 rushing yards to the triple-option Bulldogs.
In 2015, UTC ran out to a 21-0 halftime lead before a 31-23 victory gave the Mocs a share of the SoCon title. Chattanooga posted a fourth quarter comeback in the 2013 meeting, scoring with just over two minutes remaining for a 28-24 win on Oct. 26. The Mocs had to overcome a 17-7 halftime deficit in that victory.
In 2012, the Bulldogs were ranked No. 11 in the nation when they hosted the 1-3 Mocs. The Citadel had just posted wins over No. 3 Georgia Southern and No. 7 Appalachian State, before losing an FBS game at N.C. State. The Mocs went into Johnson Hagood Stadium and put on a dominating performance in a 28-10 victory for one of the biggest road wins in school history.
The 2011 game was the other side of the coin for UTC fans. The 15th-ranked Mocs took a 27-0 lead into halftime. The Citadel stormed back with 28 unanswered points in the second half to post a 28-27 win.
UTC captured a three-point squeaker (31-28) in 2009. The Citadel's Andre Roberts, currently with the Buffalo Bills, scored on a rain-soaked 43-yard punt return with 1:46 left to play to give the Bulldogs a 24-21 win in 2008.
SCOUTING THE CITADEL
• The Bulldogs are 6-4 overall and 4-2 in SoCon action ... won four in a row.
• The Citadel is the only team in the league to beat Furman this year ... 27-10 road win on Oct. 19.
• Bulldogs also beat Georgia Tech 27-24 (OT) from the ACC on Sept. 14.
• Their league losses came at Samford 55-61 in four overtimes on Sept. 28 and against VMI 21-34 at home.
• The Citadel rallied from 10-point deficits in the third and fourth quarters in a 31-27 win over ETSU last week.
• Citadel leads the nation in time of possession (35:26).
• The Bulldogs' triple-option attack is third in the SoCon and No. 6 in the FCS in rushing (265.5).
• Quarterback Brandon Rainey set a new single-season record for touchdowns accounted for by a quarterback. The junior now has 26 touchdowns (14 rush/9 pass), passing the old record of 22 set by Jack Passander in 1969 ... second in the SoCon and No. 15 in the FCS in points responsible for per game (17.3) ... second in the SoCon and No. 3 in the FCS with 16 rushing TDs.
• Junior linebacker Willie Eubanks III has been added to the Buck Buchanan Watch List. The award honors the top defensive player in the FCS ... second in the SoCon and No. 23 in the FCS with 9.2 tackles per game.
• Senior kicker Jacob Godek made all four extra points against ETSU and has now made 100-straight extra points. He is just the fourth kicker in Southern Conference history to make 100-straight extra points.
• Receiver Raleigh Webb leads the SoCon and is No. 13 in the FCS with nine receiving TDs ... leads the SoCon and No. 5 in the FCS with 22.5 yards per catch.
VS. THE TRIPLE-OPTION
UTC has a 12-16 record against triple-option teams since 2009. The Mocs are 7-3 against The Citadel, 4-7 against Wofford, 1-3 against Georgia Southern and 0-3 against Furman.

He is also 12th on the active FCS list with 27 career rushing tou
EIGHT SACKS ALLOWED IN 10 GAMES
Not only is UTC running the ball effectively, but the Mocs offensive line is also doing an outstanding job of protecting QB
Nick Tiano. Despite allowing six sacks in the last three games, the Mocs have only given up seven all year, ranking second in the SoCon and seventh in the FCS in sacks allowed.
This continues a streak of improvement up front. UTC's offensive line gave up 17 sacks in 2018, which was third in the SoCon and 33rd in the FCS. That was much better from 2017 when they were last in the SoCon and 109th in the FCS, allowing over three per game.
MOCS IN THE TOP 20 FOR FEWEST PENALTIES
After only being flagged a season-low two times for 20 yards at Wofford and four times for 35 yards against Furman, the Mocs are among the FCS leaders for fewest penalties per game. UTC is averaging 5.1 per outing, third fewest in the SoCon and No. 20 in the FCS.
BREWER SECOND IN THE SOCON IN PUNTING
Senior
Colin Brewer is having an outstanding season punting for the Mocs. He is currently second the SoCon with a 42.1 average on 30 attempts. That number would be No. 26 in the FCS if he had the 3.6/game to qualify for the rankings. He has hit a season-long 56-yarder in two of the last three games. He has 177 career punts, which is fifth all-time at UTC.

NUNNELLY ON THE WALTER PAYTON AWARD WATCH LIST
Junior receiver
Bryce Nunnelly is on the 2019 Walter Payton Award Preseason Watch List. He is also on the preseason All-SoCon first team and a consensus preseason All-American. He is currently third in the SoCon with 4.7 receptions per game and fifth with 57.1 receiving yards per game. Injuries limited his time on the field against Mercer and ETSU, but he still leads the team with 47 catches for 571 yards and four TDs, including 100-yard games against Eastern Illinois and Western Carolina. He has 5+ catches in 16 of the last 21 games and has caught a pass in 23-straight games. Over the last two years, he has 14 catches of 40+ yards.
NUNNELLY MOVING INTO THE CAREER CHARTS AT UTC
• Eight career 100-yard receiving games is third all-time at UTC ... two shy of the school record set by Joe Burks (1977-80) ... Cos Dematteo (1999-02) is second with nine 100-yard games ... all in the last 20 games.
• 1,897 career yards with 11 TDs and 133 catches

• Seventh in career receiving yards ... needs 48 to pass Joel Bradford (2008-11) for sixth at UTC.
• Needs two receiving TDs to break into the top-10 all-time at UTC.
TIANO-NUNNELLY CONNECTION AMONG TOPS IN SCHOOL HISTORY
Senior QB
Nick Tiano and junior WR
Bryce Nunnelly have hooked up for 13 touchdowns over the last two years. It would be 14 if the trick play against South Carolina in 2018 was included where Nunnelly threw a two-yard TD pass to Tiano. Regardless of how it is scored, this is one of the top throw-and-catch tandems in school history. Six of their 13 touchdown strikes have been for 50+ yards. Below is where they rank all-time at UTC in touchdowns between a QB and receiver.
1. 22 – Chris Sanders (QB) to Cos DeMatteo (WR) – 1999-00
2. 15 -
Jacob Huesman (QB) to Faysal Shafaat (TE) - 2012-14
3. 13 – Nick Tiano (QB) to Bryce Nunnelly (WR) – 2018-19

DOWDELL BACK RETURNING PUNTS
Junior DB
Brandon Dowdell was No. 6 in the FCS with a 12.6 punt return average on 13 attempts as a freshman in 2017, but only had three attempts for nine yards in 2018. He did not return any punts on 2018, but returned to the job at Jacksonville State. He quickly made an impact with returns of 18 and 38 yards. The second was a career-long and set up the Mocs' second field goal. He also had a return of 27 yards at Tennessee negated by a penalty. So far this season, Dowdell is averaging 7.6 yards on eight returns.
ULMO ON MITCHELL AWARD WATCH LIST

Despite breaking bones in both hands during the season, he is still one of the leaders on defense. He is currently second on the team and tied for ninth in the SoCon with 77 tackles. He was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week after posting 10 tackles to lead the Mocs to a 24-10 season-opening win over Eastern Illinois on Aug. 29. It was the third career weekly honor from the SoCon for Cooper, a native of Hixson, Tenn. Seven of his 10 tackles against the Panthers were solo stops. He also broke up two passes in the win.

He was the pick for STATS FCS National Freshman of the Week after posting 200 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries in a 16-13 win over ETSU on Oct. 17.
30 CARRIES THREE STRAIGHT GAMES ... ALMOST FOUR.
Freshman RB
Ailym Ford carried the ball 30+ times in each three consecutive games against Western Carolina, Mercer and ETSU. The only other Moc to handle that much of the rushing load in three straight games was Tyrone Coleman in 1998. He almost made it four in a row with 29 carries for 136 yards and two TDs at Wofford. He had 31 carries for 200 yards and two scores against ETSU, 32 carries for 116 yards and a score at Mercer and 195 yards and two scores on 30 attempts against Western Carolina. Coleman's run included 31 carries for 210 yards at The Citadel on 11/7/98, a school-record 37 carries for 142 yards against ETSU on 11/14/98 and 31 carries for 150 yards and three TDs at Furman on 11/21/98.
200 CARRIES AND 1,000 YARDS
Ailym Ford became the ninth in school history to post 200 rushing attempts in a season. The last to do it was
Jacob Huesman and
Derrick Craine in 2015. Huesman had 220 that season, while Craine had a school-record 230. He is the 13th Moc to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. Craine was the last to do it in 2016. So far this season, Ford had 1,081 yards on 206 carries.

Ford is second in freshman rushing yards at UTC with 1,081 this season. He needs 10 to pass Mike Smith's 42-year old record of 1,090 set in 1977. Ford already holds the school freshman record with nine rushing TDs. His 206 rushing attempts is second in freshman history at UTC. He needs 10 more to pass James Roberts' school freshman mark of 215 set in 1989. Ford has six 100-yard rusing games, tying with Smith for the freshman record.
FORD CLOSING IN ON UTC RECORDS
One more 100-yard rushing game for freshman running back
Ailym Ford and he ties Eldra Buckley (2006) and Tyrone Coleman (1998) for the Mocs' single-season record of seven. He is currently in ninth palce on the Mocs' single-season rushing list, but is only 161 yards of
Derrick Craine's school record 1,251 set in 2015. Ford is also ninth in rushing attempts, and 24 short of Craine's school record 230, also set in 2015.
FORD ON THE SOCON FRESHMAN LIST
Freshman running back
Ailym Ford's 1,081 yards is the sixth-most by a freshman in SoCon history. He needs 10 more to pass UTC's Mike Smith (1,090 - 1977) for fifth, 27 to pass Mercer's Alex Lakes (1,107 - 2014) for fifth and 73 to pass Appalachian State's Armanti Edwards (1,153 - 2006) for fourth. The SoCon freshman record is also the FCS mark, set by Georgia Southern's Adrian Peterson (1,932 - 1998).
