BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Senior
Nicole Buehrle had a productive day at the Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a pair of PRs and two qualifying runs Saturday at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
Â
"The first day went well. Just as planned," Chattanooga head coach
Andy Meyer said. "Everyone we had planned on qualifying for finals did and if they didn't they ran PR's in the process.
Â
Buehrle, running in just her third-ever Steeplechase event, just missed all-conference honors, placing fourth with a PR 11:27.11. Wofford's Hannah Stillman was the overall winner at 10:00.79. She, along with Furman's Gabrielle Jennings (10:06.25), broke former Moc Shannon Wommack's conference championship mark (10:07.54) recorded in 2006.
Â
"Nicole ran a very smart race and went from sixth to third in the 400 hurdles to automatically qualify for the finals," Meyer said. "She then came back an hour later to finish fourth overall and PR in the 3K steeplechase. For her to run hard in two qualifying races and then PR and just miss the podium in a very difficult steeple race is quite impressive," Meyer said.
Â
Buehrle ran a PR in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.85, finishing third in her heat and fifth overall for a spot in the final on Sunday. She will join junior
Kennedy Thomson in the 1500 meter finals finishing 11
th with her a time of 4:40.82.
Â
Thomson placed fifth overall in the 1500 meter race with a PR 4:32.84. She was the overall top finisher in the 800 meter prelims with a time of 2:12.36 on a warm and windy Saturday afternoon.
Â
"In the 1500, Kennedy had her heat under control and eased into an automatic qualifying for tomorrow's finals and Nicole was able to also qualify on time in the 1500," Meyer said. "In the 800 Kennedy again controlled the heat and seized the qualifying spot.
Katie Coker set a PR and narrowly missed qualifying."
Â
Katie Coker was the second Chattanooga runner across the line in the 800 meter with a personal best 2:20.66 in the middle distance race.
Â
On Sunday, the Mocs will get started at 1:00 p.m. Central time with the 4x100 meter relay and the day will end with the 4x400 meter at 4:25 p.m.
Â
Thomson and Buehrle will run the 1500 meter at 1:20 p.m. and the 800 meter run with Thomson will be at 2:40 p.m. Buehrle will toe the line for the 400 meter Hurdles at 3:00 p.m.
Rebekah Hampton and
Rebekah Bryant will compete in the triple jump at 3:30 p.m. and
Sophia Neglia and
Jada Hale will leg it out in the 5K with a 3:40 p.m. start.
Â
Hannah Caldwell placed 10
th in the 10,000 meter to start the day and
Rebekah Bryant posted a PR in the 100 meter Dash.
Â
"
Hannah Caldwell running the 10K for the first time ever, had a Top 10 finish," Meyer said. "Becca Bryant ran a season best in the 100 but was unable to get into the finals.
Â
"We are set up nicely tomorrow for the finals in both relays, the 1500, 800 and 400 hurdles. We have chances for top 3 performance in each.
