Coltharp Walks Mocs Off With Emotional Series Victory

Chattanooga softball earned a pair of victories on Sunday including a walk-off winner in the finale to earn the conference's No. 3 seed. UTC & Samford combined to play 26 innings in the series, including an 11-inning, 19+ hour affair in GM1.
CHATTANOOGA --- Freshman Emily Coltharp went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate while sophomore Allison Swinford fired a complete game victory to help lead the Chattanooga Mocs softball team to a 2-1, eight-inning, walk-off victory over the Samford Bulldogs in the series finale on Sunday afternoon inside Jim Frost Stadium.
Chattanooga and Samford completed all three games of the series on Sunday after yesterday's opener was suspended due to rain in the sixth with the score tied 3-3. Samford claimed an 11-inning, 4-3, win after the game resumed around 1 p.m. today.
UTC blanked Samford, 6-0, in game two behind an Amanda Beltran grand slam, evening the series up and forcing a rubber match. Coltharp walked game three off in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single, clinching a 2-1 win and a series victory.
Chattanooga wrapped up the regular season 33-14 overall, 11-7 in SoCon play and claimed the No. 3 seed for the upcoming conference championships. Samford finished as the No. 2 seed behind an 11-6 mark in league games while playing to a 22-29 overall record this season. FULL BRACKET
UTC spoiled Samford's regular season Southern Conference title hopes following the walk-off win in game three. The Bulldogs needed to take at least two out of the three games to claim the outright title.

After rain forced a game suspension in the bottom of the sixth with the score tied 3-3 yesterday, the teams combined to play an official game in just under 20 hours while actual game play was north of four-and-a-half hours.
Samford came out firing in the top of the first and scored three runs on three hits, with the help of two UTC fielding errors. Hannah Trombley belted a two-RBI double before Kathyrn Jackson added an RBI single to build the 3-0 lead.
Chattanooga offense was held in check over the first four innings by Samford's starting pitcher Taylor DeCelles. The Mocs mustered just four hits over the span while stranding a runner in each of the four innings.
UTC's Celie Hudson earned the start in the circle and settled in after the turbulent opening frame. Striking out the side in the first, she induced a trio of groundouts in the second before an incredible defensive highlight from Alyssa Coppinger thwarted a run from scoring in the third.
Samford's Timberlyn Shurbutt ripped a double off the wall in left center with a runner on first and two outs, setting up an eventual Sportscenter Top 10 play.
Jackson rounded third and looked to score before Coppinger picked up the ball on the warning track and threw a one-hop bullet to catcher Amanda Beltran, who applied a quick tag, and completed the all-world caliber play. (WATCH)
Chattanooga started its comeback efforts in the bottom of the fifth after drawing four free passes in the frame. Emma Sturdivant recorded an RBI walk with the bases loaded before Halie Williamson added an RBI single to pull the Mocs within one, 3-2.
A leadoff walk and a hit-by-pitch kicked off UTC's home half of the sixth before a fielding error on an attempted sacrifice loaded the bases with no outs. As the rain began to gain intensity, Cameren Swafford tied the game, 3-3, with an RBI fielder's choice before the game entered a suspension.
Resumption was initiated with a pair of runners on base and one out for UTC, but nothing materialized out of the threat and the game entered the seventh still tied.
A scoreless seventh gave way to extras, Chattanooga's second extra-inning contest of the season in SoCon play. Both teams stranded multiple runners in each of the eighth and ninth innings before heading to the tenth inning and playing under the International tie-breaking rules.
Samford and UTC each failed to plate its placed runner at second base in the tenth inning after Hudson and McKenna Gillespie worked out of it in the circle.
The Bulldogs scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eleventh on a fielder's choice at short, beating the tag at the plate by a fraction. Chattanooga was retired in order in the bottom half on a trio of groundouts and dropped the 4-3 decision.
Hudson (12-9) suffered the loss despite allowing just two earned runs over a career-high 11.0 innings. She struck out nine and allowed 13 hits while facing 48 batters. Chattanooga was out-hit, 13-8, and left 11 runners on base during the loss.

Continuing the theme of long, intense-filled games during the series, Chattanooga and Samford battled to an eight-inning contest in the series finale. Samford entered the game needing a win to claim the outright SoCon regular season title.
Chattanooga's Allison Swinford and Samford's McKenna Gillespie took duties in the circle for their respective ball clubs and dazzled for the entirety of the seven-plus innings.
Swinford stranded four Bulldog runners over the first three innings including a pair in the first after recording a strikeout to end the opposing threat. She allowed the leadoff runner to reach safely in each the second and third frames, but pitched out of both behind four groundouts and two pop-outs to keep things scoreless.
Samford broke through for the game's first runs in the top of the fifth after successfully completing a suicide-squeeze bunt with one out, taking a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs registered only one hit in the inning but laid down a pair of successful bunts to help aid in the attack.
It wouldn't take long for Chattanooga to respond and tie things up. In the home half of the fifth, a leadoff walk from Cameren Swafford led to a one-out single from Emily Coltharp and landed runners at first and second.

Swinford (8-3) fired her third complete game of the season and allowed just one earned run while striking out three and scattering eight hits. She set a new career-high after tossing all 8.0 innings. It marks the second time this season with an outing of 5.1IP+ for the Dalton, Ga., native.
