Take Five Jarrells

Women's Basketball Anne Wehunt

Take Five with Dena Jarrells

The Chattanooga women's basketball summer series: "Take Five" introduces fans to the 2019-20 roster.

Freshman Dena Jarrells joined the Mocs in November 2018 as an early signee. She loves to hunt and fish as much as she can and traveling to lead camps around the country with her trainer.

"We've gone to Texas, Tennessee and Kentucky as well as Michigan for four-day and two-day basketball camps and even cross country."

She has now traveled more than five hours from home and will stay much longer. While here she will be without her dog but will make up for that as a volunteer with the Humane Educational Society.

"I'll walk the dogs," she said. "It's something to do because I don't have my dog down here."

In her free time, she'll probably be scouting out secret fishing holes in the area to catch bass, crappie and catfish, but if she catches a catfish, someone else will have to take it off the hook. She does not like the tentacles!

She visited the Tennessee Aquarium on one of her trips to the Scenic City and spent a long time just looking at the Nickajack tank. "I like the one here because they have all the bass and crappie," she said. "Every one was as big as the biggest one I've ever caught! I stayed at that same tank for like five minutes."

She wears No. 10 because her mother picked it for her when she first played at the age of four. "I don't know if I really had much of a choice," she said. "A lot of my family members wore the number too."
