BIRMINGHAM---The Chattanooga Mocs got off to a slow start in the morning round before turning it around in the afternoon on day one of the Graeme McDowell Invitational. This week's quintet opened with 300 before closing with 289 over their 36 holes at Greystone Golf & Country Club.
 
Connor Nolan had the low mark over the first 18 with 73. Will Porter added 75 with Matt Smith and Moritz Lammel each turning in 76. A.J. Lintunen's 78 was the drop score in the 300 and tied for 13th.
 
That was flipped to a 1-over 289 in the afternoon. That shot the Mocs seven spots up the leaderboard into a tie for sixth with Southern Miss. Nolan's 71 was matched by Porter and Lammel with Lintunen shooting 76. Smith had the drop tally of 79.
 
North Florida (564) holds a one-stroke advantage over host UAB (565). Arkansas State (573) is third followed by Memphis (575) and South Carolina (584) ahead of the Mocs and Golden Eagles.
 
Linus Lo (Western Kentucky) and Ben Reichert (UAB) are tied for the lead at 6 under. Nolan is the top Moc ted for 19th at level par.
 
The final round begins on No. 1 for the Mocs Tuesday morning. They're pared with the Gamecocks, Golden Eagles and ULM (590). Admission is free.

3 NOTES TO KNOW

• Career-best seven birdies over his second 18 for Moritz Lammel. Previous high was six in the first round of the Mason Rudolph Championships this past spring.
• Three under par cards – Connor Nolan, Will Porter & Lammel – in the second round is the most since the final 18 at last February's UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate (Dominic Jones-67, Leon Bader-69 & Etienne Brault-71).
• Even-par total through 36 holes for Nolan for the third time in his career. Looking for his second such finish with 1-under 215 at the Old Waverly Collegiate in April serving as his 54-hole best.
