Chattanooga Basketball Postgame Quotes
UNCG at Chattanooga
McKenzie Arena – Chattanooga, Tenn.
Thursday – Feb. 6, 2020
Katie Burrows, Head Coach
On sluggish start in the first and bouncing back from that.
"It took us a few minutes to get going. I was never on edge, or got worried. I could see it on their faces. They were still focused and still ready to go, they were just trying to feel it out and see what they had to do. Once they figured out sharing the ball was the way, it was big for us. I think we got three quality quarters of just moving the ball, moving our bodies, and just playing at a real nice tempo. We weren't playing too fast, and I think in the first quarter we were just stagnant not taking advantage of things. And once we got settled in, it was nice, and really fun to watch."
Â
On slowing down UNCG's Nadine Soliman.
"It was a big emphasis at the end of the first quarter. She had 15 of their 21 and we said that we need someone else to hurt us. That was the key all along. She made a couple shots and made a couple nice moves, and once she started feeling it, you can't give her an inch. We did a nice job of recognizing her when she came in the picture. She likes going to her left so we made her go to her right a little more to make her uncomfortable. We did a much better job in the second half, but we need to start a little better."
Â
On win at ETSU last week sparking confidence.
"It's confidence. I've said it before, I don't think two-and-a-half months ago we would have been able to pull that win out. I keep using the word resilience with this group, they are never going to quit. I think it was another opportunity tonight. In those huddles, they were so in tune, so focused and so energetic. I knew that we were going to come out on top with that one. It's always a confidence builder when you can get a win, especially a really hard fought battle like that. I'm thankful we came out on top."
Â
On getting more people involved, springing production for Lakelyn Bouldin.
"It's good news. What is happening, more people are starting to get engaged, involved and producing. I said earlier, about Lakelyn struggling recently, that we have to get some people around her to start doing more. Now they have to honor that and help off, that's going to get her open. She did tonight, hit four out of five of her threes, and even posted up down there. She just got that confidence flowing and that was big for us. We know how well she can score, it's just a matter of getting others engaged."
Â
On second half SoCon run.
"To come out with a winning record in those first seven games was critical. In the way that we did, it has been such a confidence booster and now that we're home for five of the next seven, can mean big things for us. It's big to be 5-3 right now. We can't relax and go backwards. We have to take steps forward in order to win this thing, we still have a chance. We can't look ahead. We have Western Saturday and that's all I'm focused on."
Lakelyn Bouldin, Sr.-G
On emphasis to slow down Soliman.Â
"Pretty much. We let her get hot early and that wasn't the plan. We had to make some minor adjustments and made sure to take away that left hand. We just tried to shut her down and once we did things started clicking for us."
Â
On the confidence boost from slowing her down on the defensive end.
"For sure. It gives us a lot of confidence. The goal was to frustrate her and make her uncomfortable. We kind of sensed that and we fed off it, it made us want to pressure even more."
Â
On putting the game out of reach when the opporunity presented itself.
"I think we just took it really serious. We had problems over the course of the season of getting over that hump. We get a lead or cut it and tie it, and today we just said no and wouldn't allow them back in it. It was lock down defense and we got some scores on offense."
Â
On sitting at 5-3 ahead of second half SoCon play.Â
"It gives us a lot of confidence heading into the second half of conference play. That ETSU win was a gutsy one for us and really gave us some confidence. We needed that. Now we just have to get ready for Western."
Â
Dena Jarrells, Fr.-G
On gaining confidence as a freshman contributor.Â
"It's been a long season for me as a freshman coming up. I hadn't got to play the last couple games as much as I had earlier in the season. That Furman game, I didn't play a whole lot but I had to come in with Eboni fouling out. That kind of lit a spark for me and let me know that I can do this, I can play with these guys. Coach put me out there and I just let the game come to me. I love playing with Lakelyn [Bouldin]. I was excited ever since I committed because I have been watching her the last two years and it's just exciting being on the floor with her."
Â
On confidence moving forward.
"It's always good to start off the second half of conference play with a win. But this was one team where we were really upset when they beat us on the road. We were up in the second half, and the third quarter we relaxed. Tonight, we didn't relax and we were ready. We talked about it as a whole, if we can beat this team, we can win a championship. We believe in each other, we'll see what happens, but that's the goal."
