ABOUT CHATTANOOGA GOLF
LAKE HARTWELL, Ga.---The Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team walked off Cateechee Golf & Country Club's 18th hole seeing red. While the end of that sentence's leads to a negative perception, the squad wouldn't have it any other way.
Under-par scores in golf are written in red on the leaderboard. Today's UTC scorecard was loaded with red numbers. The team score of 10-under 274 was comprised of
A.J. Lintunen's 65,
Oliver Simonsen and
Dominic Jones' 69s and
Matt Smith turning in a level 71. The drop scores of 72 and 74 by
Connor Nolan and
Leon Bader, respectively, would have counted on every other team in the field for Nolan and all by one for Bader.
That saw Chattanooga rocket to the top of the leaderboard with 11-under 557. That's six better than host Western Carolina and Appalachian State in second. Piedmont is a distant fourth at 575 followed by Mercer (578) and Central Arkansas (581).
Lintunen's career-low 65 set a new 36-hole personal standard of 136. He's in the lead by two over the Catamounts Pierre Viallaneix (138), the first-round leader. Simonsen is tied for third, another shot back at 139.
Nolan is also in the top 10 tied for ninth with 142. Smith is one off that pace tied for 14th at 143 with one more stroke bringing Jones to the leaderboard tied for 17th. Bader is a single shot out of the top 20, tied for 21st at 146.
The Mocs average counting score of 69.63 through 36 holes is nearly two strokes better than the rest of the field (71.50). Today's 6-man average of 70.00 beat the rest of the field by more than four shots per man (74.30). The counting averages were more telling with 68.50 for the Mocs crushing the competition's 72.40.
This week's scoring requires a historical examination...
- 274 is fourth-best 18-hole tally and lowest since 273 in the 2013 Autotrader Collegiate.
- 13th score of 10 under or better in school history.
- 36-hole total of 557 is tied for 5th-lowest all-time and is the best since 551 (-17) last October at the Alister MacKenzie Invite at Cal.
To say it came with a hot start is an understatement. The team was 3 under after one and already 8 under through the initial three holes. Off-and-running, the Mocs were 9 under at the turn. The back side played significantly tougher, but Chattanooga still shaved another stroke off for the 10 under total. That made them the only group to shoot below par on the second nine.
Chattanooga takes the first tee Tuesday at 10:45 a.m., for the final 18. Live scoring and pairings are linked above.
