CHATTANOOGA vs. TENNESSEE
This will be the 23rd meeting between the Mocs and Lady Vols dating back to 1975 when the two teams met three times with Tennessee winning each one. UTC has won just twice in the series. The Mocs snapped a 18-game losing skid to UTK in 2012 with a nine-point victory at the Roundhouse under former head coach Wes Moore. It was Holly Warlick's first game as head coach and Pat Summitt was in attendance behind the team bench in the stands. In 2014, Jim Foster led the Mocs to a four-point victory over a familiar foe, beating UTK 67-63 in Chattanooga.
Â
THE LAST TIME THEY MET
Chattanooga mounted a three-quarter comeback after trailing 26-7 through the first 10 minutes. UTC would outscore the Lady Vols 50-33 over the next 30, falling short, 59-57 as time expired. Jasmine Joyner who saw foul trouble early, hit a 3-pointer as the final horn sounded. UTC shot 60 percent in the second half in the road game, outscoring UTK 38-21. Joyner hit a 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter to cut the Vols lead to six points and UTC would get as close as two points three times in the final frame. Queen Alford led all scorers with 19 points and Ansley Chilton scored a career-high 15 points and was 3-of-4 from long range. The Mocs shot 43.8% in the game and was 7-of-15 from the 3-point line. FORMER PLAYER AND ASSISTANT COACH TO MEET AS HEAD COACHES
In Katie Galloway's second season with the Chattanooga Lady Mocs, Wes Moore added Kellie Harper and her husband Jon to his staff as assistants. Over the next three seasons, they would combine to win 83 percent of their games (78-16), win three Southern Conference regular season titles with a record of 50-6 (.893) and earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after claiming the SoCon Tournament crown each year. In their final season at UTC, the trio saw the Mocs win a program-record 27 games including a 20-0 run through the league, and it's best seeding in the NCAA tournament to that point at #10. UTC beat Rutgers in the opening round before falling to #2 seed Vanderbilt two days later.
Â
Now Katie Galloway Burrows and Kellie Harper will meet up on the court again but this time as opposing head coaches. Burrows is in her fourth season at Chattanooga and Harper is a just over a third of the way into her third with her alma mater.
Â
This will be the second time Burrows has met a former coach since taking over at UTC. In her first season, she hosted her former head coach Wes Moore at the Roundhouse where, for just the second time in his career, he sat on the visitor's bench. UTC and NC State met twice with the Wolfpack winning both.
Â
Burrows graduated from UTC in 2004 and returned in the 2010-11 season as an assistant for Wes Moore. She stayed on as an assistant for Jim Foster and became head coach upon his retirement following a nation-wide search.
