Postgame Quotes
Lamont Paris, Head Coach
Opening statement after win over Wofford.
"I thought the guys had so much energy on the defensive end of the ball and they were really diligent and disciplined in a couple scenarios that go against what your normal instinct is. What a defensive effort by the guys, we made some shots here and there along the way, but I couldn't be any happier or prouder of what this team did on the defensive end. It was just a great and gutsy effort."
Â
On playing best basketball late.
"That's really important. We always talk about heading off down towards the end of the season, you want to be playing your best and ride that out as long as you can. I talked to the guys and I think we're still on the ascension as far as where we can get to. And that doesn't mean there won't be bumps along the way, I think we're generally on the way up still. I thought what we did on the road against really good teams in three-straight road games, it's impressive and indicative of what this team can accomplish if they stay locked in and stick to some basic rules and have discipline."
Â
On the play from Malachi Smith and David Jean-Baptiste.
"They were locked in and really locked in on the defensive end. And really discipline. As I watched our first half with them this year, I could see some slippage in the second half in some areas where we were undisciplined in. We really emphasized those things this week. Our discipline, with those two guys, was at a super high level. Being a two-way player isn't an easy thing to do. Often times you get some slacking on the defensive end, but man were they locked in tonight."
Â
On the team's current rotation moving forward.
"It's a huge advantage. This is what it is. It's COVID and we also had some other things that led to this. Hopefully we learned from some of those things and gotten better because of it, but this feels like this was the fifth or sixth version of this team. If we're fortunate enough to have this group be our final group that we ride off into the sunset with, I will feel really good and feel fortunate to have that. They're a good team and the guys are excited."
David Jean-Baptiste, Sr.-G
On the spirited defensive effort tonight.
"It was just playing my heart out and doing what I can for my team, they deserve it. They deserve me going out there and giving it my best, and that's on both sides of the floor. That's what I always try doing."
Â
On strong start keying confidence.
"You always want to come out with a strong start because it gives the team confidence for the rest of the game. We had it rolling today. We came together before the game and said let's play hard. Basketball is a game of mistakes and we know that. We just played hard and the ball was going in, it gave us a great start."
Â
Malachi Smith, RS-So.-G
On locking in defensively.
"I think we learned from the ETSU game to stay locked in defensively even though you have a lead. It's kind of hard playing with a lead like with five or six minutes left, they're playing with nothing to lose and are more confident shooting the ball. You don't want to play timid so I think we learned from our mistakes in that ETSU game."
Â
On finally returning home to play in McKenzie Arena.
"It's been a while. We're practicing and shooting all the time, but it's been a while for a game. And now we have fans in there, it's going to be good and have people come support us because we're having a great season. We don't want to let them down."
