Mocs Close Out Regular Season at ETSU

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga women's basketball team closes out the regular season Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. matchup against East Tennessee State at Brooks Gym.

ABOUT CHATTANOOGA
The Mocs currently sit in third in the Southern Conference standings behind Samford (10-2) and Mercer (9-2) and one game ahead of Wofford. Chattanooga third in the SoCon averaging 64.5 points per game and second in shooting with a .421 field goal percentage. Eboni Williams leads the Mocs with 13.0 points per game followed by Bria Dial with 11.6 and Abbey Cornelius with 10.3. Cornelius  ranks third in the league in field goal percentage making 53 percent of her attempts, second with 8.5 rebounds per game and second for blocked shots with 38 on the year. Dial has a league-best 44 3-pointers on the year and Dena Jarrells is third in the SoCon standings with a .410 shooting percentage from the 3-point line. UTC has improved its free throw shooting over the course of the season and ranks first in SoCon-only games, making 78.5 percent and is first in opponent scoring allowing just 55.2 points per game.
 
ABOUT EAST TENNESSEE STATE
The Bucs are 1-8 in league play with a win against UCNG at home. Three series were disrupted this season with ETSU and Samford playing just one game in the series last weekend then making up a game against Western Carolina Tuesday and the closing the season against Mercer on Saturday. The Bucs average 56.7 points and 37 rebounds per game. ETSU is shooting 34.4 percent from the field and 24.9 percent from the 3-point line. They lead the league in steals with 9.8 per game and are third for blocked shots with 3.1 per game.
 
Four ETSU players are averaging eight points or better with none in double digits. Jasmine Sanders leads the team with 9.4 points and 18 3-pointers. Mykia Dowdell is second on the team in scoring with 8.9 points per game and 26 steals. Jakhyia Davis is averaging 8.8 points per game and a team-high 6.1 rebounds per game. Carly Hooks is fourth on the team in scoring with 8.7 points per game and a team-high 25 assists.
 
SERIES HISTORY
UTC and ETSU are the original members of the Southern Conference and as teams in the same state, have met 84 times since 1985. UTC leads the series 60-24 including a win earlier this season. Last year's thriller in Johnson City went into triple overtime with the Mocs coming away with the victory.
 
THE LAST TIME THEY MET
The Mocs opened SoCon play with a 66-51 win over the Bucs. Bria Dial led the Mocs with 20 points, making three from range. Eboni Williams posted a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Dena Jarrells was the third player in double digits with 12 points. UTC shot 48.9% from the field and held ETSU to 31 percent shooting. Carly Hooks and Shynia Jackson combined for 25 points for the Bucs.
 
ABBEY CORNELIUS NAMED SOCON STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Abbey Cornelius earned her second SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week nod this week. She carries a 3.96 GPA in Exercise Science. She recorded back-to-back double-doubles last week in the Mocs' series against UNCG at the Roundhouse. Shot 62.5 percent in the first game with 11 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots. In Sunday's contest, Cornelius had a team-high 17 points, 16 rebounds and three assists while hitting a career-high seven free throws.
 
LONG-RANGE BOMBERS
The Mocs have made at least one 3-pointer in 674 consecutive games dating back to December 1999. That's more than 21 years! Chattanooga reached the 600-consecutive game mark against UT Martin on November 28, 2018 at the Roundhouse. According to current unofficial research, this is the second-longest streak in the nation behind Iowa State who has more than 800 dating back to 1995.
 
SENIOR LIZ WOOD MAKES MOST OF FIRST START
Liz Wood got the call to start the Mocs' Senior Day game against UNCG and grabbed her first steal that led to a 3-pointer for the 5-4 Paris, Tenn., native.

Bria Dial: 83 career blocked shots - seventh all-time at UTC; 772 career points.
Abbey Cornelius: 90 career blocked shots - fifth all-time at UTC; 558 career points; 464 career rebounds.
Eboni Williams: 838 career points; 555 rebounds.
