Softball Splits Sunday Doubleheader at Furman

Chattanooga softball bounced back from a game one loss with a shutout victory in the nightcap during a key SoCon doubleheader at Furman.

GREENVILLE, S.C. --- Junior pitcher Brooke Parrott fired her second two-hit shutout of the week to help lead the Chattanooga Mocs softball team to a key 3-0 Southern Conference victory and doubleheader split at Furman on Sunday afternoon in Greenville, S.C. Chattanooga dropped game one, 9-5.
 
After the split, Chattanooga moves to 11-22 overall and 6-7 in the SoCon. Furman improves to 16-23 and 7-4 in league action. Only four teams advance to the SoCon Tournament this season due to COVID scheduling adjustments. The Mocs currently remain a 0.5 game ahead of Mercer in fourth.

GAME #1 RECAP | BOX
Furman 9, Chattanooga 5
Furman struck for three runs in the bottom of the first, all with two outs, off of starting pitcher Hannah Wood. The Paladins 2-3-4-5 hitters each recorded a hit, three singles and a double, after the leadoff hitter was retired in just two pitches.
 
Trailing 3-0 in the top of the third, Liz Rodebaugh came through with a two-out, two-run single down the left field line, scoring Courtney Ball from third and Adison Keylon from second to cut the deficit to 3-2.
 
Furman continued its offensive attack in the home half of the third when Mackense Greico belted a three-run homer off relief pitcher Brooke Parrott, who inherited a pair of the three runs, to extend the lead to 6-2. Greico again added to the home team's lead with a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth, pushing the advantage to 8-2.
 
Rodebaugh dropped in an RBI single in the top of the fifth with the bases loaded and one out, moving the runners station-to-station. Gracey Kruse pushed across another run with an RBI groundout to make it 8-4, but the threat was ended a batter later on a strike out.
 
Courtney Ball made it 8-5 with an RBI single up the middle in the top of the sixth, scoring Kacie Lynch who singled earlier in the inning. Furman added a run in the home half of the inning and capped off the 9-5 victory with a clean 1-2-3 inning in the seventh.
 
Hannah Wood (5-8) suffered the loss in the circle after going 1.0 innings and allowing four hits and three runs while striking out one. Kat Thompson, Parrott and Brooke Sudduth combined to toss the final 5.0 innings, combining to allow six runs while striking out five.
 
Chattanooga finished with 10 hits as a team were led by Ball (3-for-3, 2B, RBI) and Rodebaugh (2-for-4, 3 RBI). Cameren Swafford added a multi-hit game after finishing 2-for-3 with a double.

Chattanooga 3, Furman 0
Chattanooga struck for a run in the top of the second after Hayleigh Weissenbach led off the inning with a single and later advanced to third on a ground out and fielding error from the Paladins. Reagan Armour brought in Weissenbach with a SAC fly to center field and gave UTC an early 1-0 lead.
 
Starting pitcher Brooke Parrott was dominant early and often, allowing just one hit over the first three innings and two hits after the first five. Parrott stranded four runners while striking out four and walking three during that span.
 
Chattanooga held to just two hits over the first five innings before doubling that total in the top of the sixth. Emily Coltharp singled to lead off the frame and advanced to second on a Courtney Ball sacrifice bunt. After a lineout, Weissenbach delivered with a two-out RBI knock to left center and extended the UTC lead to 2-0.
 
UTC added another insurance run in the top of the seventh when Ball recorded an infield RBI single with the bases loaded to bring the score to 3-0. Parrott continued to dominate the Furman offense and retired the game's final six batters in just 22 pitches.
 
Parrott (5-6) completed her second two-hit shutout of the week following Wednesday's upset win over Auburn. Parrott faced 25 batters in total, just four off the minimum, and struck out five and allowed three walks in route to earning her fifth victory of the season.
 
Chattanooga registered seven hits and were led by Weissenbach who finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and Armour who ended a perfect 2-for-2 with an RBI. Coltharp now has a hit in seven of her last eight games after finishing 1-for-4 with a run scored.

UP NEXT
Chattanooga (11-22, 6-7 SoCon) is idle this upcoming weekend after its previously scheduled three-game series against Oklahoma was canceled due to Big 12 Conference schedule adjustments. The Mocs will next take on Samford in the final weekend of SoCon play May 8-9 at Frost Stadium.
