PREVIEW: Indoor Volleyball Opens Home Slate with Chattanooga Classic This Weekend

Mocs host first Power-5 in Maclellan Gym since 2016

CHATTANOOGA – The Chattanooga Classic is back. After a year hiatus due to the pandemic, UTC's annual volleyball tournament returns to Maclellan Gym this weekend. The Mocs will welcome Tennessee Tech, Virginia Tech and Troy to the Scenic City.

TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
Friday, Sept. 10
Troy vs. Virginia Tech – 3 p.m.
Chattanooga vs. Tennessee Tech – 6 p.m. (ESPN+)

Saturday, Sept. 11
Tennessee Tech vs. Troy – 10 a.m.
Chattanooga vs. Virginia Tech – noon
Virginia Tech vs. Tennessee Tech – 5 p.m.
Chattanooga vs. Troy – 7 p.m. (ESPN+)

FAN INFORMATION
The match is open to the public and admission is free. Fans are required to wear a mask and encouraged to socially distance inside Maclellan Gym per University guidelines. The Vine Street entrance is open to enter the facility.

UTC's first match on Saturday will feature the Mocs' Smoke the Hokies promotion. The first 100 fans and first 50 students at the match will receive a free turkey sandwich from McAlister's Deli.

CHATTANOOGA NOTES
  • The Mocs enter the tournament 3-4, coming off two wins at the Hampton Inn Invitational hosted by IUPUI. UTC took down the hosts in four sets before defeating Western Illinois in five sets the next day.
  • Maia Rackel was dominant offensively last week and was tabbed Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week. She posted 77 kills throughout the four matches, averaging 4.53 kills per set and a .317 hitting percentage. The Signal Mountain, Tenn. native also recorded 12 blocks, 1.71 per set.
  • Paige Gallentine joined Rackel on the Hampton Inn Invitational All-Tournament team. Last week, she controlled the back row throughout the team's four matches. Nearly recording 100 digs in the four contests, she tallied 94 with 5.53 digs/set. In UTC's five-set setback to Toledo, she tied a career best with 33 digs.
  • Freshman blocker Marcelle Baez-Carlo led all players at the Hampton Inn Invitational with 25 blocks, averaging 1.47/set. The Puerto Rico native recorded 11 blocks, 10 block assists in UTC's contest vs. Toledo. Her 10 block assists were one shy of tying the program record.  
  • UTC is one of four teams in the SoCon hitting above .200 this season. The squad's .208 clip is third in the conference.
TENNESSEE TECH NOTES
  • The Golden Eagles are 3-2 this season and are also coming off a 2-1 weekend. They defeated South Alabama and swept UNC Asheville at the Golden Eagle Invitational last weekend.
  • The team is led by sophomore middle blocker Skylar Boom who is hitting .284 this season. Freshman outside hitter, Madolyn Isringhausen leads the team with 3.85 kills per set and 77 total this season.
  • Tennessee Tech is ninth out of 10 teams in the OVC with a .178 hitting percentage. They are ranked fifth or lower in every major category.
  • The Golden Eagles were picked to finish fifth in the conference.
  • UTC is 4-16 against Tennessee Tech in program history. The Mocs won the last match 3-1 on Sept. 13, 2019. All four of the Mocs' wins have come at home.  
VIRGINIA TECH NOTES
  • Virginia Tech is 5-1 this season. The Hokies have one sweep and three five-set victories. Their lone loss came to North Florida, the squad fell in the fifth set to UNF 14-16.
  • Marisa Cerchio leads the team with 56 kills and is third with 2.07 kills/set. She's one of three players with 50+ kills on the squad.
  • Senior middle blocker Angel Robinson is hitting .422 this season which leads the team. Her hitting percentage is 43rd in the nation and seventh in the ACC.
  • In the back row, Logan Mosley leads the ACC with 133 digs and is 10th in the nation.
  • The team is 25th Division I with 904 attacks this season and leads the ACC. Their 407 digs is 20th in the country and also leads the league.
  • Virginia Tech leads the all-time series vs UTC 4-1 and has never played the Mocs in Chattanooga. One of Filar's two Power-5 victories came against the Hokies.
TROY NOTES
  • The Trojans are 2-3 to start the season. One of their two wins was a sweep at Alabama and was the first win over an SEC school in 25 years.
  • Julia Brooks and Amara Anderson are both reigning Sun Belt Players of the Week. Brooks was tabbed offensive player of the week and Anderson picked up her 11th setter of the week accolade, a school record.
  • The team is hitting .237 this season which is the best in the Sun Belt. They lead the conference with 12.84 assists per set and 13.63 kills per set.
  • Brooks leads the team with 66 kills and is second on the squad with 3.74 points per set.
  • Defensively, Lacey Jeffcoat has racked up 70 digs, leading the team with 3.08 digs/set.
  • Troy leads the all-time series vs. the Mocs 4-3 and is 0-2 on the road.
