Game 19 – vs. Western Carolina – Jan. 20 – McKenzie Arena
Postgame Quotes
Head Coach Katie Burrows:
On Western Carolina's three-point shooting.
"Statistically they were going to based on what we knew numbers wise. We played the odds there and they did. I thought our kids did a better job in the second half getting a tighter hand up on their shooters and switching higher and getting them out of position better. We played the odds and they did go cold."
On the second half trap.
"We adjusted and went to a 2-2-1 press. It's more to slow them down so they don't have enough clock to run the offense. Our girls did a great job finding those opportunities to get them in the corners and trap them. I was proud of the aggressiveness they took there. There were a couple of times where the girls went for the ball and they should've probably stayed disciplined. Overall, I thought that was a turning point, getting them out of the comfort zone and not letting WCU find their rhythm."
On returning home.
"It's been a month. It was not intended this way. When I schedule nonconference, I don't have my conference schedule. It was great to be home. Our crowd was in it today, it was a lot of fun. I hope to have the same bunch out there Saturday."
On giving up offensive rebounds.
"The one thing we have to clean up by Saturday, we have to box out. We did not box out well. We were in front of them, but we did not box out better. Greensboro is going to be a lot alike in that way. They are going to crash the boards and they have a couple of kids who will go full speed in there and we have to make that a priority."
On Abbey Cornelius's performance.
"Even when the last few games, she hasn't been scoring a bunch, she's been cleaning up the boards, protecting the paint and doing her job. She played with a lot of confidence tonight. I told her that I have the confidence in her and you have it in yourself, and she did. And it shows by her effort today. I'm always proud of her, but it's nice for her to see her success. It says a lot that she nearly averages a double-double. She is one of our leaders and she's super dependable. Overall, there is a great deal of trust when it comes to our relationship, me, her, the other coaches and even her teammates. They trust her to be there when they need her. There is something to be said about having that teammate on the court out there with you."
Learned about on road stretch.
"We gained a great deal of confidence from that mercer game even though we fell short. I felt like for 28 minutes, we played great basketball. You felt like this was freshman vs. seniors. My freshman were having to play and they had a bunch of confidence built up because they saw they could hang. That carried over when we got everyone back for Samford. The fight and the grit they put in… to go on the road to number two and win in double OT and win was a huge confidence boost. For three games straight we were their home and SoCon opener. We had a lot of opportunities to set the bar high."
Abbey Cornelius, Jr. - F
On the second-half defensive performance.
"Our defense came out. We were ready to go in the second half. We talked at the break that we needed to come out with energy in the second half. We talk about getting a score and a stop all the time. This time we had to start with a stop. Not trading baskets and we were able to do that. The pressure from the guards… they were really able to get after it."
On her role this season.
"I never felt any pressure. I knew I needed to step up a little with the scoring we lost from last year. My team has put me in a good position, and we work so well together, there is never pressure on any of us."
On how important the win was to win at home.
"It's always important to protect your home court, especially in a league like this where every win counts. You have to win at home because the road wins are so tough."
