Men’s Basketball Kicks Off Unique Saturday Doubleheader Against NAIA-Member Johnson University

The Chattanooga Mocs men’s basketball team will face Johnson University before the McKenzie Arena floor turns its attention to a highly-anticipated UTC wrestling showdown against one of the nation’s best.

CHATTANOOGA --- The Chattanooga Mocs men's basketball team is in search of its fifth-straight win this Saturday afternoon when it hosts NAIA-member Johnson University (TN). Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. ET on ESPN+ and will be the first leg of a special doubleheader inside McKenzie Arena.
 
It's not the normal basketball doubleheader fans are used to this time of year. The hardwood will switch to a wrestling mat in the evening when Chattanooga wrestling welcomes No. 2 Iowa to the Roundhouse for a 7 p.m. showdown. Switching back to basketball, Chattanooga (6-3) is winners of its last four and has been on an electric three-point shooting spree, a spree that has never been seen before in the Scenic City. UTC, the nation's top team in three-pointers made per game (12.0), has made 12+ threes in each of the four games during the streak. A four-game stretch of 12-plus threes has never been accomplished in program history.
 
Something else that has been a consistent bright spot during the win streak is the play from graduate transfer Jake Stephens. The seven-footer has posted at least 26 points and nine rebounds in the last four games including Tuesday's 31-point and 13-rebound performance. Stephens leads the conference and ranks eighth in the country this season in points per game (22.1) while sitting fifth in double-doubles (5).

OPENING NOTES - LAST TIME OUT
Chattanooga (6-3) jumped out to a huge first half lead in route to an 88-76 victory over Milwaukee (7-4) on Tuesday night, extending the team's winning streak to four games while snapping the Panthers five-game win streak. The Mocs never trailed in the contest and led by as much as 27 in the second half. Jake Stephens once again paced the Mocs, recording 31 points and 13 rebounds to notch his fourth-straight game with 26 or more points.
 
NATIONS TOP THREE-POINT SHOOTING TEAM
Entering NCAA DI action on Friday (12/9), Chattanooga is ranked No. 1 in the country in three-pointers made (12.0). The team sits 6th in the country in three-point attempts per game (30.2) while sitting 20th in three-point percentage (39.7). During the four-game win streak, UTC has made 12 or more threes in each contest to mark the first time in program history every accomplishing the feat.
 
EARL EFFECT
As Chattanooga leads the country in three-pointers made per game, Cornell (Ivy League) ranks third (11.9) and Penn State (B1G) sits fifth (11.7), rounding out the top five. What's the connection between these three programs? HC Dan Earl. Cornell: Earl's younger brother Brian is the current HC. Penn State: Earl's alma mater after graduating in 1997.
 
WELCOME BACK, WELCOME BACK
Chattanooga welcomed the return of a pair of key contributors to the 2022-23 roster during Tuesday night's win over Milwaukee. Guard Khristion Courseault, the Houston Christian (formerly Baptist) transfer, returned from injury for the first time since appearing in the season opener at Charleston and posted 11 points and three assists. Grant Ledford, the returning sharpshooter, saw four minutes of floor time in his first action of the season after suffering from a hand injury.
