Softball Walks Off Rockets, Splits Day One of Jane B. Moore Memorial

Mocs secure second walk-off win of 2022 season

AUBURN– The Chattanooga Mocs' softball team split the first day of the Jane B. Moore Memorial at Auburn on Friday afternoon capped off with a 5-4 walk-off win against Toledo.

The Mocs opened the tournament with a 9-1 setback to NC A&T.

UTC moves to 8-8 this season, while NC A&T improved to 9-6 and Toledo dropped to 3-8.

The Mocs are back in action tomorrow morning as the squad faces the same two teams beginning at 11 a.m. EST.

GAME 1 RECAP
NC A&T got on the board first with a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the first. The Mocs had a runner aboard on a free pass in each of the first two innings but were unable to get a run across.

Gracey Kruse found herself on second base in the third after a walk and a wild pitch. She advanced to third on an Emily Coltharp infield single and scored on an Aggie error to tie the game at one.

In the fourth, with the game tied at one, NC A&T's Icess Tresvik hit a line drive over the center field wall to give the Aggies the lead back. In the fifth, after the second Aggie hitter reached on a throwing error, they loaded the bases with two outs. Tresvik hit her second homer of the game, a grand slam to put NC A&T on top 6-1.

The Aggies plated three more in the sixth to take a 9-1 victory in six innings.

Hannah Wood got the start in the circle for the Blue and Gold and allowed four runs, two earned in 4.1 innings of work. She struck out two, walked three and allowed three hits.

Brooke Parrott entered in relief, allowing five runs, three earned on three third with one strikeout and a walk in 1.1 innings.

Olivia Lipari and Coltharp recorded the two hits for UTC.

Notable: 
  • Chattanooga's five walks are a season high for the squad. Acelynn Sellers' two walks marked a career best for the freshman.
  • The two hits are the fewest for the team since opening weekend on Feb. 11.   
GAME 2 RECAP
Chattanooga got on the board first with a Kaili Phillips sacrifice fly, scoring Olivia Lipari.

After a scoreless second inning, Toledo took a 2-1 lead with an RBI double and a single. The Rockets extended their lead in the fifth with a sac fly.
In the bottom of the fifth, Chattanooga cut its deficit in half with a Coltharp groundout, scoring Kruse. Toledo got back its 2-run lead on a throwing error.

The Mocs stormed back with two runs in the sixth. The scoring began with a Phillips solo shot to center to bring the Toledo lead back down to one. Two batters later, Sellers struck her first career double to score Bailey Myers from second, tying the game at four.

In the seventh, after Coltharp reached on an error with one out, Adison Keylon got on via a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error. The Mocs put two more runners on with two two-out walks to bring up Sellers.

Sellers delivered with a 1-1 single through the left side to secure the walk-off win for the Mocs.

Sellers went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the contest. Phillips had a 2-for-2 day with a walk and two RBI.

Coltharp, Liz Rodebaugh and Reagan Armour registered the other hits for the Blue and Gold.

Izzy Alley tossed her first complete game and picked up her first career win allowing four runs, two earned, on eight hits and two strikeouts.

Toledo's Durieux went five innings and allowed four runs on five hits with one strikeout. Ellie Price came in relief and picked up the loss, allowing one run on two hits with two walks.

Notable: 
  • The win is the second walk-off win for the Mocs this season.
  • This is the third one-run game of the season for UTC. The Mocs are 2-1 in those contests. It's the first time this season the Mocs have won after being outhit.
  • Coltharp has recorded an RBI in seven of the last 11 games.
  • Armour extended her team-leading hit streak to five straight games.
  • Phillips' two RBI brings her to two multi-RBI games this season and 15 in her career.
Series history:
The game against NC A&T was the first all-time between the two teams. UTC leads the all-time series vs. Toledo 5-0.
