Torbett Completes Coaching Staff

CHATTANOOGA – The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Director of Volleyball, Julie Torbett, announced her complete coaching staff on Friday afternoon.

In addition to keeping Darin Van Horn as an assistant coach and Juliana Van Horn as Director of Operations, Torbett brought two new members to the family. The new head coach announced the addition of Madison Bergren '18 as an assistant coach and Kelvin Thomas as content producer.

"I am excited to announce my staff for the 2022 season," said Torbett. "We really have all our bases covered on and off the court with the talented group of coaches and support staff that have signed on to lead the Mocs' Volleyball program."

Darin Van Horn will enter his eighth season on the sidelines of the indoor team in the fall. He has been with the team since 2015, when the Mocs won their first Southern Conference Regular season title since 1998. In recent years, Van Horn has taken the lead on coaching the back row and defense. Last year, the squad had one of the best back rows in the league as the team was second in the SoCon with 16.84 digs per set.

"Darin understands my vision for the program and believes in what we are doing," said Torbett. "He will be switching roles on the court and work with the blockers and attackers this season as well as share in the recruiting responsibilities. He will also continue as the head coach of the beach volleyball program."

Prior to Chattanooga, Van Horn served as a volunteer assistant at the University of Virginia for one season. It was his first post-graduate position after several roles during his undergraduate days at Penn State.

"I would like to thank Coach Torbett for the continued opportunity to coach here at Chattanooga," said Van Horn. "I am eager to work with this staff and make Chattanooga Volleyball conference contenders again."
Bergren, a 2018 graduate and three-year player at Chattanooga, returns to the court after four years away from Maclellan Gymnasium. Recently, Bergren served as the head coach for the A5 Chattanooga Girls' AAU Volleyball Program and was on the staff for two years.

"When I was searching for assistants, Madison was the first name that was mentioned and when I met her, I knew she was exactly what I was looking for," Torbett said. "She was a setter for the Mocs and will naturally work with the offense and serve as the recruiting coordinator."

Bergren was a setter from 2015-17 at Chattanooga and was a part of the 2015 SoCon Regular Season Championship team. In her senior year, she recorded 20 or more assists in five matches and 30+ in six. She registered double-digit assists in 36 of the final 41 matches of her collegiate career.

"I want to thank Coach Torbett for giving me this opportunity and I am excited to be back and coach at my alma mater," said Bergren. "I loved my time as a player at Chattanooga and now I am thrilled to be on the sidelines as a Moc. I am hopeful for the future of this program and the direction that it is heading."

Torbett welcomes back Juliana Van Horn, who has been the Mocs' Volunteer Assistant Coach for the last three seasons. She will enter a new role as the Director of Operations during the 2022 season. Van Horn has been coaching both indoor and beach volleyball for more than six years. In her three years at Chattanooga, in addition to her role as volunteer assistant coach, she has also served as director of operations and the team sports psychology consultant.

"I am excited for Juliana to transition to a new role this season," said Torbett. "She brings a lot of things to the program. Specifically, the operations role is an incredibly important part of maintaining an efficient and organized program."

Lastly, Torbett brings a new position to her staff, a content producer. Thomas comes to Chattanooga with more than 20 years of videography experience, including working with the East Carolina, Ole Miss and Winthrop athletic departments. Recently, Thomas was the communications specialist for the City of Greenville (North Carolina) for the last six years.

"I am thrilled that Kelvin will be a part of the staff," Torbett added. "His videos bring my vision to life and enhance the experience for our student-athletes. Video is a critical part of everything we do."
