Soccer on the Road Thursday at Georgia State

Freshman Zoey Mize has a team-high five shots on the season.
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga women's soccer team will take on Georgia State Thursday night in Atlanta, Ga., for the first of two road matches this week. 
 
MOCS vs. GEORGIA STATE
Georgia State leads the series with Chattanooga 6-0 with a narrow 1-0 victory against the Mocs in Chattanooga last season. The last three matches have been decided by just one goal including a 2-1 loss for UTC in overtime at home in 2018. The Panthers have won all three matches in Atlanta.

ABOUT CHATTANOOGA
The Mocs are 0-2 on the year with a loss to UAB on the road and at home against Eastern Kentucky. Maggie Shaw has the Mocs goal on the season, pushing in a header off a free kick from Grace Klippenstein in the second half. Freshman Zoey Mize has a team-best five shots with two on goal while all four of Shaw's shots have been on goal.
 
ABOUT GEORGIA STATE
The Panthers are 2-0 on the year with wins over Clayton State (3-0) at home and Murray State (2-0) on the road. Eva Diez Lois leads GSU with two goals while three more have one each. Keeper Jaddah Foos has played 135 minutes with a pair of saves and one shutout while combining with Maria Subies on the second shutout.
 
 
MOCS NEWS AND NOTES
NEWCOMERS IN THE STARTING XI
With 10 newcomers on the roster, several will get the chance to make an immediate impression. Freshman Zoey Mize got the starting nod from head coach Gavin McKinney as did transfer Birna Johannsdottir. Hannah Opie, Clarissa Salinas, Caroline Richvalsky and Kaleigh Bosak came off the bench for the Mocs in the first two matches.
 
MOCS GO 1-1 IN PRESEASON
In the opening exhibition match, the Mocs outdueled Middle Tennessee 2-1. Shelby Hash scored both goals for the Mocs in the preseason. Hash scored the first of her two goals in the second of three 30-minute periods and then scored her second in the final two minutese of the match. In the second preseason match, the Mocs were up against a chippy Jacksonville State crew. The defenses matched as neither team had many scoring opportunities. The Gamecocks scored the lone goal in the final period for the win.
 
FOOTBALLERS IN THE SUMMER LEAGUES
Chattanooga was well represented with 13 veterans and newcomers on five teams throughout Tennessee this summer. Seven played in two teams in the USLW. The Chattanooga Red Wolves SC boasted five members of the Mocs current roster tht included Maggie Shaw, AK Anderson, Mackenzie Smith Zoey Mize and Kennedy Heavrin. Shelby Hash and Grace Klippenstein played for the Tennessee SC. In the Women's Premier Soccer League, Abbey Saddler and Avery Catlett played for the Chattanooga Football Club. The Nashville Rhythm featured Sylvie Keck and Kelly Tuerff. The Tennessee Force added Caroline Ekern and Claire Palya.
 
SUPER SENIORS
The Mocs have seniors who will spend their fifth season with the team due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Maggie Shaw is a defender and the 2020 SoCon Defensive Player of the Year. Keepers Abbey Saddler and Ashton Shields along with defender Shelby Hash. Shields has a season left, however, if she chooses to use it due to an injury at the start of last season.
 
TO THE BRIM WITH NEWCOMERS
The class of newcomers is in the double-digits with 10 on the roster. Transfer Birna Johannsdottir comes to UTC from Mississippi State while the remaining nine are all freshmen. Two come from South Carolina, one from Texas and the remaining six are from the state of Tennessee.
 
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ADD FLAVOR
Sofia Andrade is a Chilean student-athlete who calls Canada home. She comes to the U.S. from Edmonton, Alberta. She is joined this season by Birna Johannsdottir who transferred to UTC from Mississippi State. She is from Gadabaer, Iceland.
 
ADRYAN DARNELL MOVES TO COACHING STAFF
With one year of eligibility remaining, Adryan Darnell made the move from student-athelte to student coach. She works with the Mocs at practice and helps with operations for games and road trips.
